Hi Hummer.
The cable comes from speedo drive, straight up, turns 90 degrees along lower hull plate, 90 degrees over top of fuel tank, fixed by clip 120mm approx. from bolt hole at track guard. through wiring plate at division plate up onto track guard, under steel cover, and up to speedo.
I hope that helps.

Hello Høimark, greetings and welcome.
I respectfully suggest your carrier is 1944 production date NO.2 MK-II*, (not a UC-2 from 1943). As such, the speedometer drive is taken off the differential extension. Other than feeding through the divisional wall, you will discover all is the same as it would be on the MK-I* hull series as it is for the MK-II* hull series in their assorted stowage configurations.

Marc Van Aalderen may be a good resource to speak to regards your need for the speedometer gear drive if yours is missing. There are a few parts sellers who ‘may’ have the cable cover. The two mounting brackets are basic, fairly straightforward to copy. Perhaps a local to you company can make the drive cable. I believe one forum member in Canada had them made for a reasonable price.

Enjoy the journey.

M.

Default Speedometer drive MK-II*

See page 116 of FUC-03, May, 1944. Note cable length.

Has anyone a picture of what the both ends of the speedo cable looks like? I may have a source if I can match it. I have a local company that makes cables for me, been trading for many years, very knowledgeable and few ‘old timers’ still there, might be able to help out. If there’s a demand, I don’t mind getting a few made up, keep costs down. I think I have a Mk1 in my spares, but need to dig through them all.

Default U/C Speedometer Cable

Hi Hummer,
The outer length is approx 3160 mm and is a flexible 5/8" dia. outer casing.
See there is an extra wrap for protection at the Diff end.
See attached pictures, showing the speedo end and the diff end, along with the two securing metal clips. The inner is easy enough to determine, as it would probably protrude about 1/2'' and the end will be squared off to suit your speedo and the drive gear from the diff has also a key that slots into your gear The inner is normally secured with a crimped clip , back from the protruding end on each one, I might need another look in my parts to find a picture of the inner for you ,cheers Andrew.

Here's are pictures of the bottom end of an early Brit. U.Carrier speedo cable.
Note the thrust washer. The armour is located in the hole at the lower end.

Smile speedo cabel

Dear Lynn its Hummer

Thank your for nice and learning Fotos

Can you also help me with, the other mysterium for me.. hæ hæ

How long is your cabel ? 10 feet and 3 inc ? and is is it running down inside the motor cabin Parallel withe the motor block, up or down ... Is the cabel ruling under the metal tubes with the electric cabel inside or up and parallel with the block and down again on the right side of the water cooler ?

I under understand that som Universal carrier had the speedo cabel running down on the hull on the right side of the hull wall.

But in my carrier it don´look like that ... but I need to find the right way ..

thanks for the nice love ups of the cabel.. my drive is the same

Hummer the cable goes above the right fuel tank along the right side hull and through the hole in the division plate. The cable hangs down on the long clip (see Andrew's photo) from an open hole in the track guard line of rivets.

The speedometer shaft was supplied as an assembly with the inner and outer parts. Canadian speedometer shafts and casing assemblies replaced the UK Type Y, although the inner remained the same length, 10’ 3”.

The Canadian shaft and casing assembly for the three bogie wheel hull models is P/N C01UC-106014-B.

There were two Canadian speedometer types, identified by the change in their dial and pointer. The early model dial is observed with white markings on a black background, the later model, usually called the MK-II* speedometer, had a two tone white and black dial, white pointer showing a red tip. See part numbers C01UC-106001-C for the speedometer assembly, along with 106106 B, and 106107 B for the dial and pointer.

The black dial face pictured is a reproduced item by an MLU contributor.

The speedometer cable length is published as 10’ 3”. Once you add the end bits the total length is closer to 10’ 5”.

Default Core, speedo cable

Gents,

Brian Asbury had a NOS core cable that he measured for me a couple of years ago. He stated the length to be the same as in the parts list, i.e. 10'3".
Possibly he quoted the parts list instead of measuring it?

I had a new complete cable made here in the Netherlands. I told them the inner cable length and gave them all the parts the cable connects to such as speedometer with elbow and driven gear with brass adapter so they could find the correct fittings. Cost was about € 100. I still have the order form with the recipy so they can make more if needed.

Cheers,
