Holten area or Twente canal was also my first thought.....I don't know why though. Maybe because it reminds me of a picture of a field in Holten with soldiers dug in.

Did you find it here?:

If not, maybe the link can help you in your search.

April 7, 1945. Vicinity is stated as "north of Laren". A South Sask Regt soldier being treated for wounds attributed to enemy sniper fire.
The war diary indicates the Regiment crossed the Schipbeek on 7 April, 1945.

Default Map references from war diary

In the war diary pages there are mentioned some map references.
I located them on a wartime map (Lochem, Sheet 15, scale 1:50000) and translated from there to GPS coordinates.
You can copy and paste them in Google Maps and the location shows up.

MR 079058: GPS 52.24112, 6.38768, Holterweg 73, 7245ST Laren.
MR 075075: GPS 52.25909, 6.37789 , crossing “Oude Schipbeek with “Oude Stationsweg”.
MR 074074: GPS 52.25809, 6.37689 , a field about 150 meters southwest of MR 075075.

MR 077055: GPS 52.23809, 6.38400 , Broekdijk, Laren.
MR 055096: GPS 52.27435, 6.35258 , Crossroads Oude Stationsweg- Deventerweg.
MR 084066: GPS 52.24848, 6.39528, Tolweg 12, 7451NB Holten.

Robert Jan,

This is the picture that I had in mind. I tried pinpointing the location with some residents in Holten a few years ago, but failed.

source:
http://www.velocitasholten.nl/fotoholten.html

The website marked the pic as "Beuseberg", but I wonder if it could be the same location as in your picture?

Alex

p.s. Thanks for your PM, welcome back!

I was in the Holten area last sunday and had a quick look "north of Laren". The pictures attached, were taken along the Schipbeek on the corner of the Roudaalterweg, showing the southern bank of the Schipbeek.
The section of the Schipbeek west of the N332 road pretty much blends into the landscape, but the section east of the N332 (where attached pics were taken) shows a bank quite similar to the one in your pic, Robert Jan.

The Roudaalterweg lines up pretty well with the Beuseberg (where the pic with the foxholes was presumebly taken) , which in turn lines up with the Rijssenseweg, where the famous pic was taken of Canadian troops passing the old Holten windmill (acroos the street from Paalman cars) was taken.
