how to do an oil change
I drained the oil from the differential of my M5 high speed tractor today. I'm not sure though if draining the oil from the diff also drains the oil from the transmission. Is it a separate compartment?
I also found the drain nuts had a hex in them. They do not appear to be an imperial socket. Would they be BSW? Last edited by 20387774; 11-10-15 at 00:37. |

M5 tractor
Hi John
sounds like an interesting project.this is a US vehicle so all the fittings/ nuts bolts etc/ should be pretty standard. If you do not have a manual you should get a repro as quick as you can. there are many us dealers but Portrayal Press used to print all kinds of US military manuals for a reasonable price. I think they are still in business. Any chance you could post a picture or two??? Bob |

Simplest way to get the bungs out is to find a bolt with a head that will fit the hex and weld it to a piece of flat bar.

I had another go at it and found it was an SAE fitting. It had just been banged up a little and burred. When I drove the socket on with a hammer, it worked well. I just wanted to drain the disgusting fluid out of the diff and final drives and will now re-fill it with SAE 30 before winter is upon us. I've looked and looked, but there is no tranny drain plug. I will have to assume filling the diff will fill the transmission and final drives.
Thanks for all the replies! Here's a pic of the beast. I hope to get at it next year. |
