Lucky to date, just had to replace some nuts and grease fittings, everything else cleaned up nicely. This will not last.

Default Rolling chassis

Folks,

Mounted the axles and springs to the frame. Feels quite good considering that they've been apart for over forty years. Had to have a couple of spring u bolts made up, but other than that it's all original components. Satisfying to meet my goal for this year. It will be nice to start adding components and systems, just won't be as dramatic.

Default Parts search

Guys,

While the Lynx restoration is actually progressing quite well, I'm having a bit of difficulty tracking down the following items. The rubber axle bumpers, Ford part number 5783 and cages for 3/8" square nuts that are welded onto the insides of the fuel tank sponsons. If anyone knows where I can source these parts, please drop me a line.

For the cage nuts, are you hunting for caged nuts to fit a 3/8 thread or nuts 3/8 across flats (for smaller threads)?
Macs Auto sells some http://www.macsautoparts.com/early_v...+nut&x=17&y=11

Mcmaster- Carr sell a style that could be modified and welded on but not identical to those used on CMPs. http://www.mcmaster.com/#cage-nuts/=v8xp5v Also, I don't know if they will sell to you in Canda or if you will need the help of an American friend.

Fastenal also sell cage nuts similar to the McMaster ones designed to clip into a panel http://www.fastenal.com/ again, not the same as CMP with flat ears for welding. Fastenal uses the term weld nuts to describe the style closer to that used on CMP http://www.fastenal.com/web/products...VendingMachine= (McMaster also come closer if searched for weld nuts)

And there's always ebay - searching "weld cage nuts" got results for threads from 1/4 to 1/2 inch in flat ear style similar used on CMP except that the cage is in 2 pieces rather than 1. These 2 part cages must be current production.

Grant, Chris and Hanno,

I have always been impressed by the amount of support that lives within the members of MLU. Great group to belong to.
Grant, I have been in contact with M.C. , they do not have the "cages" that I am looking for, but they believe that they may be able to get them from one of their suppliers. Here's hoping.
Chris, Thanks for your continuing support. If M.C. doesn't come through, I will take up your offer. You are right the bolt size is 3/8", while the square nut head measures 5/8" square. I am looking for an even dozen.
Hanno, Thanks. I have trolled past that ad picture of Dirk's several times without registering. While the profile is a bit different, they are certainly better than what I have.

Default Ford Donor HUP parts

Peter,

When you last visited, you took a bunch of pictures of the Ford HUP that I have in the back 40. Did it have the rubber bumpers that you are needing for the Lynx? (Might need snowshoes now to get back there now!)

Thanks for your offer. I did consider your parts truck, but the thought of your typical volume of snow and the fact that they would probably be of the same condition as mine put that thought on hold. Looks as if I have a full set of NOS bumpers coming from Dirk L.

Default CWM visit

Folks,

Thanks to Michael Miller, curator at the War museum, I was able visit last Friday while the museum was closed to the public to view their Lynx and get some measurements and close up pictures. As a bonus Michael toured me through their restoration shop. It was a great opportunity see some of the work that takes place behind the scenes. Their Ram Kangaroo and Ram 6 pounder are real pieces of history.
Their Lynx is hull # 4013, with a build date of October 1944, and also served in Italy. One month earlier than mine and only 212 units before mine.
Great motivational trip and I highly recommend the museum.

Default Another hurdle

Guys,

I found a skilled welder locally who was able to take my mangled, twisted and cut RH sponson and piece it together. When I dry fitted it at home, it was better than a factory fit. Needless to say, he's now got my LH sponson and quite a few more pieces. I've attached a picture of Dave Everall and his work. Dave and his father Larry, own LDS welding, just outside of Picton.

Guys,

Not sure where time disappears to, but it just seems to slip between my fingers. Got the bottom portions of both sponsons for the fuel tanks installed. Testament to both the welders that have worked on my Lynx is the fact that I have yet to ream a single bolt hole anywhere. Everything just bolts up to where it should. The transmission, transfer case and steering box were cleaned up, and mounted. Slowly starting to resemble something semi-respectable.

Default Lynx Reassembly

Peter, other than being on a beach this time of year……..a warm garage, enough snow outside to result in a postponement of the "honey do" list, tunes on the radio and parts going BACK on the Lynx. Life's pretty good!

Keep up the great work and keep posting pictures! Nice to see another bit of history edging back into reality.

Guys,

Thanks to my total lack of mechanical background, small steps forward can be extremely satisfying. My time in the garage tinkering with the Lynx is quite rewarding. Sorted out the transmission linkage and fuel tanks. Feels real good considering this was the where everything was cut apart when it was demilitarized. Couldn't help but include a picture of what it first looked like.

Guys,

Should anyone know where I can source these parts for the front shifter, please drop me a line. Our local parts shops aren't very interested in anything that doesn't have a serial number, and the snow is too deep in the scrapyards.

You need to list out the whole part number. Most of us don't have a lynx manual on the bookshelf.

Those numbers shown are just the section number. The prefix (and suffix) to that will tell the tale whether the part is a commercial item or a unique scout car item.

When I worked on the same shift box a few years back, there was a bit of wear on the shift blocks and on the bottom plate of that box. Nothing a bit of build up with the welder couldn't fix though.

Thanks, I'm learning my way through the manual as much as the Lynx itself. The parts numbers that appear to be unique to the Lynx are preceded with either a C19SR, which I assume refers to a Mk 1 Lynx or C29SR which I take to refer to a Mk 11 Lynx.

The parts that I am seeking read as 40 - 7207, BB - 7218, BB - 7219, 21C - 7220, BB - 7226, BB - 7227 and BB -7228. The sliding blocks and floor plate appear to be in fairly good condition.

To my non-expert eyes, those look like commercial part numbers rather than unique to Lynx. Google suggests many of them are available from resto suppliers Macs, VanPelt, GreenSales etc. (you may want to try both with and without the hyphen, I took out the extra spaces when searching) BB-7228 seems to have a current NSN suggesting it has been used in something a lot newer than the Lynx.

Yep, all those parts are common to the commercial shifters, so your parts search, as Grant has mentioned, should be through any of the vintage Ford parts suppliers.

The prefix tells a lot about the part such as when it was introduced and what vehicle it was originally designed for. Ford changed their part number prefix pattern in the late 30s/1940 just to confuse the issue a little. There is usually an explanation in the front of the parts manuals to help decipher their codes.

The commercial pattern shifter and yrans are similar I think if not the same.
A friend of mine has a trans for sale out of a 2 ton commercial truck from the 40s which might work. Cheap too.

Chris,

The transmission itself checks out quite well, also the rear shifter unit. My issue is with the front shifter column. I suspect/hope that you are right about the sharing of parts, i.e. the commercial Fords of the same era. The transmission that your friend has, does it still have the shifter column ? any chance of a picture ?

Guys,

Due to the limited space in the drivers space (ergonomics was not the first priority with CMP designs) I used a chunk of plywood as a template of the front floor to dry fit some of the operators controls and see how all the bits and pieces that I've acquired/ salvaged/ had fabricated, fit together. Highlights what is missing, but still feels like progress.

Default Visitors beware

Guys,

A good friend, Mike Hopkins, came for a week long visit and found himself pulling wrenches in the garage. Quickly sorted out the gear shifter and linkage issues, then we replaced all the wheel brake cylinders.
Fortunately our wives are understanding and limited their shopping sprees. With luck the frame and undercarriage will be off to be painted next week.

Thanks for your comments, My original goal was to have the Lynx on the road, in four years from the time that I got it. While I may appear to be ahead, I am thoroughly enjoying the journey and the people that I meet along the way.
