Default An auction of WWI interest

From CP Oct 15

KINGSTON, Ont. (CP) — A rare collection of original cartoons and letters penned during the First World War on the frontlines and in the trenches of France will be auctioned this week in this eastern Ontario city.
Starting Thursday morning, bids will be accepted for a roughly bound volume of 33 original cartoons, entitled Hun Hunting, and two volumes of personal letters drawn and written by Lt. Guy Rutter, an officer with the Fourth Canadian Mounted Rifles regiment that served in France from July of 1915 to June of 1916.
Also included in the unique lot will be three copies of a short book Rutter wrote called Frightenings and a handful of non-war related cartoons he drew.
Gordon’s Auction Centre was made aware of the collection when it fell into the care Suzanne Pasternak of Milton, Ont., a family associate, after the death of Rutter’s son.
The cartoons are black and white and appear to have been done in charcoal. They depict battle scenes with oversized bullets.
Rutter also appears to have been a prolific scribe, often writing long and humorous letters to his parents from wherever he was fighting.
“We dined most luxuriously at daybreak today on rum and coffee — mostly rum, and quite black,” Rutter wrote in a letter to his parents dated Oct. 26, 1915, from France. “Believe me, you walk on air for a few moments after ‘breakfast’.”
Also, according to one of the documents in the lot, Rutter was wounded in the Battle of Zillebeke in Belgium in 1916. He went missing and was initially reported dead until he surfaced at a hospital in France. He nearly lost his arm in the battle.

Collection of cartoons, letters and a journal sold for $5500 to a Toronto area art and book dealer. Looks like he is going to split it up to maximize profits. Brian
