The Case of the "Traitors": an Essay on Freedom of Speech in Politics
MONTREAL, Dec. 14 /CNW Telbec/ - As Canada enters an election campaign,
Wilson & Lafleur is publishing an essay on freedom of speech in politics,
written by Montreal lawyer François Gendron.
The volume, approximately 80 pages in length, narrates the story of legal
proceedings that spanned a period of over twenty years and were initiated by
Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette against the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de
Montréal in response to its declaration that she had betrayed Québec during
the repatriation of Canada's Constitution-proceedings which the honourable
Senator recently lost in the Supreme Court of Canada.
The book also recounts the story of a lawsuit brought by two former
Québec premiers, Jacques Parizeau and Lucien Bouchard, against Richard
Lafferty, a financial analyst who had compared them to Adolf Hitler. Messrs.
Parizeau and Bouchard recently won their case in the Québec Court of Appeal
and a subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada was settled out of
court in 2005 through a confidential agreement.
Based on the outcomes of these two cases and a few others, François
Gendron concludes that tolerance for the language of political debate is very
high both in Québec and in Canada, but that certain limits must be respected.
In principle, however, a citizen who expresses an honest opinion in good faith
on a question of public interest has nothing to fear, since opinions, by their
very nature, are neither true nor false, and therefore cannot be labelled as
untrue.
François Gendron also concludes that of all the freedoms, freedom of
speech is the most precious. If all the others were lost, freedom of speech
would allow us to reclaim them. This freedom must be protected. Speech may
censor the government, but the government must not censor speech.
The publication of this book is therefore quite timely. For all those who
participate or are interested in public life, it will be a useful tool for
avoiding any missteps.

Default Politicains sueing us.

First off - I most certainly share the expletive opinions expressed by the extremely honourable Mr Blair.

Is it not true that legal costs for politians are covered by the taxpayer? If the Rat... lickspi... Bag... ly.. ... tards are never going to pay - why not let loose the layers for a decade and sue the asses off everybody until they can collect and say they were right.
