Default SAE2 Cummins adapter

Looking for an adapter to go from a 6BT 5.9 Cummins diesel to SAE2 bell housing.
I believed these were used on F600 series, FL70 medium duty trucks.
I need to mate a Cummins diesel with a Spicer 3053 deuce transmission, understanding that I also require an adapter ring as the 3053 is SAE3.

My first thought on reading your request was " Why does he want to stack adapters, there has to be a neater solution?". Are you just looking at the front part of the housing (to engine) or is the second part you refer to the back part of the housing (to transmission)? Dimensions of the mating surface of the 2 parts for different SAE housings are given at http://powerlinecomponents.com/liter...heel_chart.htm among others. I think the SAE standard must also make some kind of reference to the fore-and-aft location of the split in the housing as it doesn't make a lot of sense to define a standard for interchanges that addresses diameter but not length. The full set of SAE standards took up several feet of shelf space 30 years ago and must be bigger now, have a look in University libraries (School of Mechanical Engineering).
A quick Google on "cummins sae 3 adapter" gave just short of 3 million hits.

Another Google on "Cummins 3903282" confirms the part number in the ad is a Cummins part number http://www.forengine.com/parts/Cummi...-Flywheel.html These folks also list other housings for the 5.9 with different positioning of the starter and mounting points which suggests you might be well off having a chat with your local Cummins shop to see what's what.

Herein lies the problem.
Of course, adapting directly say from engine to transmission is ideally done with a trans that matches the block, one that was engineered that way.
In the case of Cummins engines, Dodge for example uses their own style adapter to mate an auto, or manual such as a nv4500. They do not share the SAE standard (think round, evenly space bolt pattern)Instead they came up with something totally different.
On many of these trans, the bell housing covers the clutch, flywheel etc.
ASpicer 3053 deuce transmission has a SAE3 pattern short bell that requires use of a flywheel housing type adapter.
It would make sense right off to find a #3 flywheel housing. There is only one option that I have found for this but there are issues. First off, the starter mount is on the wrong side (passenger) as these housings were meant for gen 2 Cummins with a totally different fuel pump and turbo setup. I will be using a gen 1 Cummings. Secondly, it also uses huge transmission mounts that stick way out. This becomes a clearance issue at the firewall.
I would prefer to utilize stock engine mounts near the front sides like a regular motor and a rear transmission mount if possible.
Now, medium trucks on the other hand used #2 sized flywheel housings for transmission like the Spicer, Eaton or Fuller manual mated to a 5.9 Cummins.
My dillema is to find one of these housings as they appear to be more streamlined in design without the huge rear mounts and most feature a driver side starter location which I will need.
I can source an spacer to go from #2 on the housing to #3 on the 3053 as it only adds 1'' to the total length overall.
I am certainly no expert on this so I am hoping to pick up ideas from our own panel of gurus.
This is a first attempt at a re-model for me, not used to the custom world as my expertise is usually restoration.

Chris,
Try Langilles Scrap and Cores in Port Perry, On. 905.985.6800.
They wreck many Grumman type trucks with Cummins engines & possibly have the pieces you need. They are very knowledgeable on truck drive trains & are usually helpful.
