Default CMP round roof hatch padding?

Hi all

I am just wondering what people use for the padding in the round roof hatch as found on cab13 CMP's.

Also how thick should the pads be?

Any help is much appreciated

The original appears to be laminated from three layers of coarse brown felt. The present thickness totals 1-1/4" but I suspect that when new it may have been 1-1/2" thick .
The first thing I plan to try as replacement is three layers of cheap blue nominal 1/2" camping mat (actual thickness for three layers glued together is 1-3/8"). In addition to being cheap it has some give but isn't soft like foam and is not water absorbent. It doesn't show, so may be an acceptable substitute.

Check with Brian Asbury, Jordan. He might have a reference sample in his collection he can provide detail photos and specs of for you..

All I can remember is the padding came in three or four identical curved sections that mounted to the inside of the steel ring. They were OD canvas pads stuffed with either horse hair, kapok or coconut fibre. Cannot recall how the canvas pad was fitted to the support.

It was installed in 3 sections around the ring.
The padding, along with a curved backing plate (mine looks 3/32" when heavily painted) with 2 caged nuts on the inner face of each plate for securing to the ring is wrapped with canvas (in 3 parts (upper, lower, face - curved to fit the ring). As far as I can tell, the canvas was only secured by being pinched between the plate and the ring.
I want to go and fabricate parts for the 15 cwt trailer but will try to post photos later.

Thanks all. Sorry I should have clarified better. I just needed to know what was used for the filling material. I already have the ring, backing plates and new made canvas.

Haha no I have not tried that Bob. But next time I see your truck I'll know where to check.

But I just finished the roof hip ring crash pads. I had to make one new metal backing plate as the original was too rusted away to use. A few of the captive nuts also needed replacing. Metal was sealed in POR. Canvas was treated to a wax based waterproofing seal inside and outside. The actual padding is for marine use so even if it gets wet it will not absorb and water. I also used 3M spray adhesive on the backing plate, foam and backside of canvas. It helped greatly in assembling these and nothin should move around.
