Here is another scan of the photo showing the unknown. I am convinced that it is a Bergepanther. The next photo below shows the rear left quarter of a Sd Kfz 251/7 Aust D mittlere Pionierpanzerwagen, and the last is of the rear left of a Bergepanther.

Sd Kfz 251/7 Aust D mittlere Pionierpanzerwagen

Bergepanther.

Okay rear end of a panther, not necessarily a Bergepanther. What looks most correct is the rear step and that little curl to the rear edge of the side armour. But I can not see all the fittings or tracks or stowed crane on the hull side. Nor can I see the rear spade or the pulleys and cable for lifting it. The 251/7 is the pioneer vehicle you showed a picture of , I was thinking more of a plane Sd.Kfz.251 without the side cut away and wood verticle sides replacing it.

Phil, I'm no expert but that turret looks like it came off an early Crusader tank. Am I wrong?

Credit to my good friend Paul Hocking:
"Good old photo, maybe six other views seen somewhere, its a Tiger II of the 1st Kompanie, schwere Pz Abt 503 Normandy, and yes a Bergepanther in front of the Werkstatt Kompanie, sPz Abt 503, near Vimoutiers east of Falaise August 44."

I asked about the "characteristic" Bergepanther exhaust pipes, he said its a catch as not all were made like that.

Default Staghound F.S.

Hi Derek:

I'm not a Stag expert but, if I remember correctly, Bill restored his as a Fire Support version. They had Crusader tank turrets with a 75mm that looked like a big six pounder w/muzzle brake. Bill didn't have the right barrel so he installed a Sherman 75mm barrel.

That Stag is now in the RCA Museum Collection in Shilo, Manitoba.

Cheers! Mike

Stagound III, a regular T17E1 with a Crusader turret mounting a British 75mm gun. 100 were ordered, only 32 manufactured. These armoured cars were intended to be used in the support role but only appeared right at the end of the fighting in Germany. The bow machine gun was deleted and the turret replaced with a Crusader III tank turret with modified hatches and its original 6pdr gun replaced with the British 75mm (which was itself developed from the 6pdr bored out to fire American 75mm series ammunition).

Used post-war by Denmark (8) and The Netherlands (number unknown).

...and one in the Netherlands. This example was stripped and set in concrete as a pillbox in the 1950s.

Thanks Hanno for clearing that up. My lovely wife bought me the "Encyclopaedia of Weapons of World war II" by Chris Bishop for Christmas and I just happened to be leafing through it when Phil posted his pic. I knew I had seen that turret before.

The extended pipes are Bergepanther and fitted to clear the ground anchor blade when raised; of course these items and others may have gone for some reason.

Paul H has sent me a couple of pictures from one of his esoteric books, the first you have seen and the second shows another recognisable armoured car at the same spot.

As far as we know the photographer used this location with the KT as a backdrop for a whole series of images which we think are in the IWM. These two are the usually published ones and it appears only the focal length or printing enlargement changes.

Default Bow Gunner

Interesting that, as found, Bill's had a bow gun ball. When he restored it he plated over the bow gun as explained in Hanno's post. I remember him telling me about getting the shape of the cover plate just right. I think Stu MacDonald machined it for him.

Cheers! Mike

Default Staghound / bergepanther

Re the Royal Tiger/bergepanther.i have another picture of this in a book, and it is a bergepanther towing a disabled royal tiger. The both of them were caught by an air attack and shot up in Normandy. The Canadian War Museum annex had an excellent restored, running Staghound 2 years ago,but it has not been placed in the new museum as yet,I believe.Quite a few Staghounds were sold surplus in the Sorel area of Quebec in the 50's.A friend of mine shipped a few of them to collector's,notably Bill Gregg. There is still a cut-down chassis locally, but it has been sold to a potential restorer.Companies were buying them to use as snow plows, etc, with the turret removed.

The British most likely only shipped over a turret, to be fitted to a Staghound hull in Canada. Possibly to find out if this conversion could be carried out (on a larger scale) in Canada. The same thing happened with a Sherman Firefly turret.

Hello all,

The 12th Manitoba Dragoons received T17E3's as late as April 20th, 1945 and at that point turned in their Stag AA's.
They had 12 of them in the Regiment.

Here is an example from C-squadron.
