Default heat

in that sort of heat it will shrivel up everything, so please please keep it up your way, thought it was hot enough here yesterday at 38.3 c and today 35c. The only thing good about this was it cooled off to 15c with a cool easterly breeze last night here which was nice.

Max

Just checked ... current temp says -7 light snow - though a couple of hours ago snow was very heavy/dense and big fat wet flakes.

3 avalanches lately have claimed 4 lives ... 3 in BC - snowboarding? (one young man visiting from Australia and one over by Lake Louise Alberta close to BC border ( from Quebic I believe but not sure ) avanlanche dangers a problem for a while now. These all very close together timing wise.

RCMP have identified the missing snowboarder as Leigh Barnier, 21, an Australian working at a hotel at the resort.

Quebec man dies in Rocky Mountain avalanche
Last Updated: Monday, January 7, 2008 | 8:17 PM MT
CBC News
A Quebec man died Monday after an avalanche near the resort town of Lake Louise in Alberta caught him and a friend while skiing.

The two, both 19, were ascending the east face of Mount St. Piran around 3 p.m. MT when the avalanche struck. One man was buried by the onslaught of snow, while the other clung to a tree.

The buried man was rescued by his friend, who called 911 on his cellphone.

The two were flown by helicopter to Lake Louise, where an ambulance was waiting to take the injured man to Mineral Springs Hospital. He later died.

Officials are withholding the name and address of the deceased until his next of kin has been notified.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring British Columbia, officials have recovered a body following an avalanche Sunday at the Big White Ski Resort near Kelowna.

Continue Article

Police have not confirmed that the body belongs to Leigh Barnier, an Australian-born employee of the Moguls Hotel at Big White, reported missing after an avalanche tore down the Parachute Bowl, an area designated for advanced skiers and snowboarders.

There were 10,000 to 11,000 people on the mountain at the time of the avalanche. Two others who survived the avalanche escaped without injury.

Two other avalanches in B.C. Sunday killed two men who were out snowmobiling with friends.

Floods also a problem ... and ice jams in Prince George major problem that will have to run it's natural course ... homes/biz ... ouch (more norther wester BC)

So ... weather and natural events taking tolls.

Nevada sure badly flooded ...

Ouch ... prayers for a little less of all please.

Default average

That is very tragic news . Condolences for all friends and family

Extremes of weather never end well

If we could take an average of all the weather patterns it would be a lot better

My dogs arent impressed with the heat either this taken at 6.30 p.m

Sure is tragic. Lots of publicity about avalanche dangers right now too, which many people just ignore and go out of bounds areas on purpose "It can't happen to me" ... yeah, it can happen to you

In BC sometimes I read stories about the authorities going after the people they "rescue" to recover the expenses of the rescue operations and all, when the rescued one/s has knowingly ignored known warnings and signs and gets in trouble and has to be rescued, at fault. Sounds a totally reasonable to me!

Some amazing photos (beautiful wild wow!)

The highlighted areas, when clicked on, show the varied degrees of avalanche travel etc dangers/warnings and will bring up the writeups, including mentions of any deaths etc::

In Toronto right now it's about +12C, and supposed to get up to between +13 and +14... this is our January thaw, only about two weeks early this year! By this time next week, projected highs are around -5C, so we'll be back into it shortly.

As warm as this sounds, it's also very damp, which (I find anyway) plays hell with old bones, particularly joints. I'm moving under my own steam right now, but that's about all I can say... I - NEED - HOT - AND - DRY!! Ergh... but what the hell, it's half-over... for now... you folks don't know how lucky you have it!

Here in Quebec (or Quebic if you’re in BC) the weather has being really strange so far this year. On New Years Day we got a big dump of snow then the temp drop down to -20C. The last two days there has being fog and rain. The temp today got up to +8C, tomorrow I should reach +12C.

I think that we now have BC’s weather, and we won’t give it back!!!!

It was around -8 C here today but I'll take that anytime over that +42 stuff. I can bundle up in the cold but once you're down to skin and it's still too hot you just have to suffer.

Default Ontario, Canada recent weather

Yesterday, and day before, it rained like the hammers of hell!

Snow is all gone, high winds, lots of deadfall from the trees, vegetation is green(ish). Got to +15(!!!), here in Snowen Sound.

Doesn't look good for the snowshow demo being put on this Saturday. Local ski hills are crying the blues and laying off staff.

OK, Al Gore...willya lay off?

35C on the varandah today and the only green left is the native summer grass and the weeds. The creek that suplies the house water is dry again so it is back to carting water. The joy of living on the land

Strewth mate, I used to be a pretty good slow-bowler!

Now what were you asking? Oh yeah... torrential rain as we speak, about 11C but going down below zero by dinner time tonight. We're back into it now! All the more reason to snuggle up against... er... never mind!

Come to think of it, it IS a little warm in here right now...

Too bad we couldn't divy up the temps to halfway each!

Actually pretty good here right now at -2 ...

Sad news, another death due to another avalanche, making 5 in the last week I think? And 11 this season, so far I believe they said!!! Stay away from the avalanche-ish areas I say

Strong winds in Ontario topple truck, flip planes, tear off roofs

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO - Powerful winds blowing across Ontario on Wednesday left about 140,000 homes and businesses without power while also causing transportation headaches and property damage.

Winds gusting between 60 and 90 kilometres an hour pushed away a recent warm spell, leaving single-digit temperatures in the region.

In Cornwall, where the winds tore down signs and sent garbage flying through the air, there were travel restrictions on the Seaway International Bridge.

Tractor-trailers that were not loaded, cube vans, RVs, buses, open trucks with loose material, any vehicles with heavy tarps and all pedestrians were restricted from using the bridge.

In the eastern Ontario town of Prescott, the wind toppled trees and damaged roofs. The main street was closed for hours after a powerful gust blew a huge section of the roof off a downtown furniture store.

The Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge was closed for several hours after a tractor-trailer toppled onto its side in high winds and pierced the guardrail in Johnstown in eastern Ontario. A portion of the trailer hung over the St. Lawrence River. The driver of the truck wasn't injured.

Special restrictions were also in place on that bridge, where winds of 72 km/h were reported.

Wind-blown debris on the tracks - including a chain-link fence - caused delays for at least three Toronto-bound GO trains.

Toronto's Pearson International Airport shut down some runways to keep planes out of a strong crosswind, causing about 20 flight delays. At the Buttonville Airport north of Toronto, the wind flipped over two light planes.

Fierce winds were also blamed for leaving about 140,000 Hydro One customers without power, as trees fell onto power lines and sent hydro poles crashing to the ground.

About 110,000 customers were still without power in parts of the province as of 9 p.m. Wednesday night, said spokeswoman Laura Cooke.

High winds late Wednesday kept Hydro One helicopters grounded and some crews couldn't get to downed wires.

Cooke expected, that if the weather holds, up to 1,000 crews would be out Thursday

Nothing much.... just 150 yards from our building part of the CIBC sign fell 52 stories in the wind yesterday evening... Bay St was closed all the way south from Adelaide (where I work) to Front St, and King St closed all the way from York to Yonge... basically, they closed down the financial heart of Canada until mid morning.

AJ, you haven't gotten back to me about my date yet, hmmm?

BTW, for those who actually care, we're back to around zero, damp and gray. It's supposed to be snowing tonight north of the city, so I'm not going to bitch.... much! I just spent two goddam hours in a goddam dentist's chair having some goddam hung-over incompetent ream out the biggest tooth in my head and fill it full of crap which will no doubt fall out as soon as the warranty expires. DID I MENTION THAT I HURT??!! So be nice, you morons...

AJ, you do have a way of picking 'em, dont you? Gee, Lara or Jennifer, Lara or Jennifer... hmmm... when do I have to decide by? Either way, it's unlikely I'll come out of it alive, but then what a way to go!
