Was checking the shipping cost at a Canadian UPS store to ship an approx. 6 pounds CMP part to Joao Bosco in Brasil...... part worth about $20 CND....
They want $329.00 as they only ship airfreight. Just for giggles will check the old fashion Canada Post Parcel rate next !!!!!! Cheers

Stupid, outrageous, crazy, ridiculous, call it what you will but shipping costs for the average Joe are increasing exponentially. In Australia it is in part to help pay for the Australia Post CEOs four million dollar a year remuneration package.
Meanwhile California grown oranges are in our supermarkets as well as various other produce from all over the world at competitive prices and Australian wine can be purchased cheaper in the UK than in Australia. Methinks just another aspect of the lunacy overtaking the planet. David

You have to remember that it all comes down to volume.
Canada and the United States do so much business together that there are many avenues for shipping. There are literally 10s of thousands of flights, trucks, buses, boats what have you that cross the border daily. I am sure the same cannot be said for trade with places like Brazil... I have even noticed that shipping within Canada or to the USA is even cheaper than from the USA to here, at least with Canada Post vs USPS. Perhaps said cmp part can accompany someone in luggage going to Brasil or piggyback in someone elses shipment... You guys might try Uship and see what happens. I have had good luck. Ex. 250lb transmission from Louisiana to Buffalo for $125 400lb 4x8 ft pallet Texas to Ogdensburg NY $250

Truck Parts In Luggage
Hi Chris
Your mention of "Perhaps said cmp part can accompany someone in luggage going to Brasil" reminds me of having a CMP air compressor in my carry on luggage coming back through Heathrow. I'm trying to explain CMP truck air compressor guy on the x-ray machine is looking confused, wife pipes up "lorry part" guy nods and sends us through to the gate. Got to Boston and the US customs officer is looking equally as puzzled this time just let my wife explain what it is, again on are way no problems. Cheers Phil

I just had to send 3 parcels to Canada and I thought the postage was very expensive at $800 until I had a Quote from DHL at $1450?? Now that was stupid. I could have bought a seat ticket on a plane for that.

DHL have a fixed price box here in the UK. It works out to be a very economical way of sending small but heavy MV parts all over the world.
Well worth investigating. |

I bought a skyraider receiver from a guy in anchorage...he sent it by CANADA POST the same day I purchase another set from a guy in UK...which came first...I will be happy when Canada Post takes over Royal mail (if ever) as the service is second to none...regards malcolm

Not British - Librarian
Quote:
No my wife is a librarian so she is very aware of the context of words. She saw I was headed into a to complex explanation of what the part was she just inserted the two words that explained it. Cheers Phil PS Margaret just asked me to thank you for the compliment, she as been told that she tends to use a lot of British terms, by a language professor who used the library.

For reference a 6 pound package 12" x 12" X 12" sent from the Toronto area to Brazil by surface parcel post would cost about $105 by Canada Post.
Still a lot but better than UPS. I recently had a 50 lb. flywheel mailed from Missouri to Ontario by USPS. The postage was $180. (The part cost $50) |

Not really an issue of size or weight anymore
Hi
Like a lot of things it no longer is a matter of actual what does it cost for a service it is a matter of what is the threshold for is it worth my time to be bothered. Years ago you wanted to ship a truck tires across country you took them to the bus station and called party you were shipping it to when it arrived at the other end. Few years ago you wanted to ship heavy (under 100Lbs) parts around the US you sent them United Parcel Service little fuss fair cost. Last time I had something heavy shipped to me, a truck transmission, UPS managed loose the wooden crate (40 Lbs. of wood) transmission arrive re-wrapped in plastic. No explanation or even comment about what happened. Basically UPS said what crate. Of course 3D Carbon Fiber printers are going to eventually end shipping parts what you will be selling and buying is the file to direct the printer. No solutions just adding my rants Cheers Phil

What is just as annoying is the habit if sellers, particularly Macs in the USA of shipping an item , say the size of a cigarette packet, in a box the size of a shoe box. I'm sick of paying for foam or newspaper filler. Especially if you are buying a part that is robust and unlikely to be damaged.

I have purchased goods via mail order for many many years. The main lesson learned is that it is often better to buy more, rather than less to make the shipment worthwhile. I am sure we have all experienced the $10 part that ended up as $50.
For this very reason I usually stay away from couriers like UPS. I got burned that way as my $10 part had shipping, brokerage fees and GST added to it. Places like UPS often have a minimum on brokerage fees, in this case it was around $20!!! Understandably, ordering bulk does not work with one off purchases.

To back ip what Chris has just explained, I had this email from Roy Nacewicz (States side) who does original style nuts bolts studs etc for Ford V8s.
This is from the States to N.Z. (to your part of the world may be different) I hope this explanation helps. From Roy: (who is excellent to deal with) Quote:
