Fuel Tanks

I am just putting some feelers out to see if anyone is interested in repro fuel tanks for ford ,chev cmp's or carriers
They are exactly the same, the the cmp,s are seam induction welded and the carriers are all soldered as original the carriers have all cast and turned bronz fittings. The cmps will have no sending unit installed as that is the only difference between canadian built ford and chev
Rights and lefts will be available if there is enough interest

I've had some tanks made over here (UK) I've had the drain and vent fittings re cast, shout if you need any. It may be easier than doing all the work twice.

I and possibly others from my area would be interested in the tanks for both sides of a carrier. Cost of construction and shipping would, could be a factor. Please keep us informed.

Tell us a little more..... will these be exact look alike with dimpled drain plug.... sending unit stamped circle with re-inforcements..?

What provision do we have for the sending units..... standard after market made in wonderful China with very similar 5 bolt pattern are readily availalbe for hot rodders..... I beleive Mac Auto has a good FORD look alike for that period.

What about the filler neck.... short or long..... cab 11 or cab 13 style.... again designed to take standard chromes fuel cap.......

or MAYBE a fairly generic tank with provision for local modification to suit the buyer's need...... filler necks and senders can be installed by the buyer.

Good repros would cetainly fill a LARGE gap in many of our restorations.

Any idea of price..... ball park....... shippng might be bitch for bulk.

Because of the bulk it may be advantageous to take advantage of members occasional travel to bring large amounts for major cities.

I could pick up a load in my pickup for the Ottawa crowd and also the Montreal fellas...... Montreal could then send a suitable vehicle to recover there share from the Barn. Everything prepaid direct to Stew.

Things can be worked out.

If you're tooling up for a run of these, you might also like to consider doing some Ford Radiator overflow tanks. They are often rusted out, or missing altogether. Cab 11/12 and Cab 13 have the same cross section and construction as the fuel tanks, just dimensions of 12" wide x10" high x5" long.

I would certainly be interested in some brass fuel tank filler pieces for my carrier if any are available. I have one filler cap and two tank outlet fittings,but that is all.

Hey bob very good points. the tanks will be available as early and later CMP models the longer and shorter necks and the drain form in the bottoms exactly like originals whith the countersunk sending unit rings installed
They will be for Ford or Chev but no sending units themselves installed
They will have fuel pick up pipes and drain plugs as original AND the filler tube as original ( without the Chrome cap or any cap) but will fit the origianal caps
The cost will be determined by number produced > the more the cheaper
Right now it looks like about 500 per tank but if orders where supplied with your old drains vents and necks the price would be in the 350 range and hopefully cheaper
With tooling cost the break even point is 40 units
Tony I also thought of the expansion tanks but one step at a time
If we can make the fuel tanks fly and get the price down I will take a run at the expansion tanks
Anyone and everyones input will be appreciated

All those old rusted tank with good necks are now worth a fortune.....guess what we are doing this weekend.... and think of all th rusted tanks we passed by in the years past......

Might not be a bad deal Stew...... 40 tanks is only 20 vehicles.....

Now if I remember...way back when...Doug Weatherstone from the Paris area had a bunch of NOS short neck fillers with cap..... he might still have some.... anyone knows where to look for him.

Another possible source.... the valve covers of cab 11 and osme cab 12 had an extension bolted on as a tall filler neck..... they are identical to the gas tank filler neck...same cap...same internal chain on the cap..... some rusted out valve covers are not worth money.....

Now if we could get Dirk in Holland to ship bulk some of the brass large oval plate that fitted on original cab 11 tanks ( with reserve valve) we would really be cooking.... in fact an old oval brass cover could be salvaged and glues/epoxied on the top section of a new tank and survive all but a close inpection.

Once the dies are made for the end caps ... making the narrow Ford expansion water tank would be relatively easy.

Stew any idea how he woud install the old necks.... lead soldering as per original or fancy Tig welding..?

The easiest way is to resolder as per original
tig welding could also be done but the solder would have to be completely cleaned or there would be much more of chance a leak
The tanks could also be shipped as break downs and be welded by the buyer. The carrier tanks would not be a problem as they are soldered but the CMP tanks to be original are roll induction welded at the ends and main seam
Just a thought, to keep down costs

I beleive the tank fully induction welded is the way to go to avoid leaks.

Soldering the neck should be relatively easy.

Is the fabricator planning for internal baffles...?

I would spring for a couple of bare tanks...... I would look after the neck instalation here. The secret is to keep the tank design so flexible that they can be used on a cab 11, 12, 13 and even adaptable for HUPs.....

Just for something to do I contacted the mob from USA at tanksinks for a quote on 20 tanks and the feed back i got was I could not afford the tool for CMP or a carrier tank but if 100 plus was order the price would be more respectful but they would not give me a number
Anyway I tried
I guess it is back to one at a time the hard way!
