Default M38A1 bracket question

Can anyone identify the small bracket located just above the grab handle on my CDN2? I have not seen one of these before, and not sure what it was for.

Thanks,
Wayne

Default bracket

No idea.

The two holes are for a diamond-shaped clip for the handguard of an FNC1 (as issued). There is a rubber boot missing on the floor next to the sidewall. The trouble with puting the rifle right there is the mag and pistol grip were really in the way of getting in or out.

Thanks Terry. Sorry, my question & photo was not clear. Yes I have all the parts to the rifle bracket, but the piece im referring to is the bracket circled in yellow. See new photo. It looks like it was madr for some type of card to slide into it from the top.

Looks like a variation on the Unit Servicing Record holder. This would be attached to the dash and hold the service record card showing oil changes and such.

Photo credit to Colin Stevens, he has this one for sale on his website.

I have never seen either bracket on any military vehicle. We usually just picked a suitable screw somewhere on the dash to hold the PMR (USR). The lower screws of the light switch were a common position. The tags were somewhat useless on the open top vehicles anyway. By the time it came around to needing serviceing, the ink had long faded away to nothing.

In the days of the older M-series stuff, it was fairly acceptable to drill away and install all kinds of gadgets. When the Iltis came out, the messgaes started about no unauthorised modifications. As a mechanic, we saw some real winners, like guys drilling right through the hulls of a M113 to install things like lighting.

Thanks guys. I kind of thought it was a mystery item (or added post service). Looks like it will remain that way for now.

Thanks,
Wayne
