Australian Motor Sport hero Peter brock has been killed competing in a tarmac rally in Western Australia.
Love him or not (me not) he will be missed from the local sporting scene. From the Sydney Morning Heralld .... "Australian motor racing legend Peter Brock has been killed in an accident while taking part in the Targa West rally in Western Australia, motor sport officials have confirmed. Brock, 61, from Melbourne, became Australia's best known motor sport personality and a dominant figure in the sport. West Australian police say a car competing in the Targa West rally crashed into a tree at Gidgegannup about 30 kilometres north-east of Perth about 12pm. The car was carrying two people and one had died in the crash, he said. The major crash investigation unit was at the scene, he said. Ambulances were not called. Motor sport officials have confirmed the driver was Brock. Brock's car hit a tree and no other vehicles were involved, it is understood. The accident occurred near the small community of Gidgegannup, about 40 kilometres east of Perth. Known as 'Peter Perfect' and the 'King of the Mountain', Brock retired from full-time racing in 1997 but returned to Bathurst to win the 24-hour race in 2003. The editor of Wheels magazine, Jed Bulmer, says Peter Brock was the consummate driving professional who won many accolades, but will best be remembered for his mastery of the race circuit at Bathurst." A sad few days for Aussies, Brock's death comes on the eve of Steve Irwin's funeral.

I was at work when it came over the local radio station. The entire machine shop went quiet and everyone was asking if they heard it right!!!!!
Holden or Ford supporter, everyone agreed it was a rather surreal day for Australian Motorsport. |

Not being at all superstitious, but this is the second "Aussie Bloke's Icon" to die in a couple of days. These things are supposed to happen in threes, who might next to succumb to Death by Misadventure?

Beware ...The evil eye.... Both Ozzie Icons were well loved around the world and knew the risks..and although it is very sad ,we all have to travel the same route...Can't send the apprentice to do it for us.. In both cases ,it was quick and they didn't suffer.. Beats the hell out of rotting away in some cancer ward.. God bless 'em...

The third Aussie icon died the same day as Steve Irwin. He was the renowned author Colin Thiele who wrote the famous Storm Boy and the old school favourite Sun On The Stubble. I believe he wrote in excess of 90 books. Bob |

I agree Bob - Colin was a wonderful author. At least he lived out his 'natural term'.
Peter Brock lived not far from here - I sometimes saw him in the local Bunnings but never actually met him although he was friends with a mate of mine. Quote:

The Thing about Brocky and Steve Irwin is that they both gave a lot to the rest of us, Both in their different ways , being excellent role models to us and our kids, and..... they both died, living their dream.
