When I took this colour chart (I forget where I got it from originally) and made it greyscale the three colours light stone , light grey, and slate grey, come pretty close to the photo shades.

Toronto CNE.....
How many of you are old enough to remember the inside of the building where the pictures where taken......
...... at the Old CNE grounds.... now who remembers what the name of the buildings was...... was it the Manufacturer's Annex?? ..... and what are the odds that it was the same time (same August 1940) the CNE video clip previsouly aired on MLU...? was made by Ford of Canada.... As an aside on the color......did GM use a similar 3 tone color at the factory....... or was Ford trying to stand out in the field?? BooBee

These are the only pix I can find of this camo scheme and they're all Cab 11 Fords. Not a Chev in sight! On a previous thread Hanno thought it was a fantasy scheme applied at the factory and not a military scheme. With six different trucks with similar paint you'd think it must have been more common than that. Could this be the paint job they gave them before they decided that the disruptive pattern couldn't be applied at the factory because parts got mixed up before being reassembled overseas? This happened in mid 1940 so the time frame's right. Also this complex a paint job is more than you'd want to do in the field but in the factory it would be relatively easy.
On the F15A pic Gregg states that this scheme was commonly applied at the time. I'll have to wait and see what some of the paint job gurus have to say

Disruptive Camouflage painting
Hi there
At this point, the official disruptive painting scheme used by the British (and Canadian) armies was based on Military Training Pamphlet No.20, which called for 2-colours, a base and a darker shade used for the disruptive pattern. The pattern itself was to be horizontal-diagonal vs vertical. (see attached diagram). The paint jobs shown in the photos are not based on this. I suggest they were applied to vehicles meant for public display by the manufacturers (to look 'warlike') as opposed to any office National Defense plan. Steve

Ford Fantasy Paint
I have to agree with Steve:
The only photos I have ever seen of this cam pattern are the same six or so Ford 11's that are in the CNE display. Still; 30 years in this crazy hobby and I ain't seen all the photos yet! My luck, as soon as I send this someone will publish the technical order proving me wrong! Mike

Fantasy
I agree - I think these were probably just painted like this for a specific display - Of course the wheels were not supposed to be patterned. I bet they were repainted before going back into service.

David/Cletrac:
Just a short note to thank you for the photos you just posted. For me, completely new and most appreciated as examples of alternative paint schemes. If you have more such photos, I hope you will post them here. Cheers, Bill

We all know that the factories painted the trucks in camo patterns for the first few months of production but discontinued this practice because of mismatch of pieces when reassembling overseas. My question would be, if the factories were rolling out camiouflaged trucks off the assembly lines, why would they have to invent "fantasy" schemes to show the public? Couldn't they just show them acres of already camouflaged trucks?
To take this a step further, does anybody have any factory photos showing the "normal" military camo paint jobs from 1940 or these all there are? An observation from the first five photos. The 8 cwt and the 15 cwt are a dark colour in the wheel wells and the rest are what would likely be light stone.

This one might get us rethinking this camo pattern. It's the only one I can find with army personnel involved. It's off the factory photos CD too.

A few years ago I bought six carriers to cut up for parts. They all had front armour but no side armour. The company that originally bought them in 1946, did so to get the side armour for grader blade edges. When I was working on them Peter Simundson took photos of the camo on the front armour. It was two colour green on three of the six carriers and maybe he still has the photos. These obviously never saw Europe but the camo must have been applied by the military. One carrier that I still haven't been able to spring from the guy is a 2 pdr. with no gun.
Cheers, Barry

The above photo and the 15 cwt farther up have the 2B1 body that wasn't produced until late 1940. The 1940 CNE was held on the week of Aug 27th so those two 15 cwts weren't painted that way for the CNE. That makes this scheme being applied over a three or four month period at least.
One other interesting point on all these pix. None of them have the D-rings on the front bumper.
