Default Ammunition in Field Artillery Tractor

I recently came across a reference on the 25-pounder stating that the limber carried 32 rounds (agreed) and that an additional 96 rounds were carried in the Quad tractor. The source is "The Gunner's Favourite" published by the National Army museum in the U.K. This is the first time that I have heard of the Quad (Field Artillery Tractor) carrying that amount of ammunition. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Hi Doug;

I've read that the over all amount carried between limber and tractor was 96 rounds total, that would mean that the tractor alone carried 2x the capacity of the No. 24 and No. 27 limbers (at 32rds each capacity).

Hope this helps.

Cheers

A field Artillery Tractor carried only 32 rounds. A 25 pdr section consisted of two guns, four ammunition trailers, and three tractors. Each section carried a total of 224 rds. Of this, 128 rds were carried in the four trailers, and 96 rounds in the three tractors.

Thank you - an a follow-up question. I have looked at an FAT in the CWM Vimy House. 32 rounds would take up a reasonable amount of space - 8 boxes of shells and 4 boxes of charges - where was it carried? Presumably not on the floor of the crew compartment, and I don't think any other compartment would be big enough.
