Default CMP lights

Hello
A question about the cab 11 and 12 headlights, are those special built for the canadian army or are they used on other civilian trucks?

An other question, can some one give me the type of side lamps used on british army CMP on the front fenders, I think they are lucas? Are they used in WWII or are they post war?

Cheers
Sylvain

Hi
I think the headlights I think are specific military.
The side light are also called Butler side lights and are used on many war time British vehicles.
Cheers

Default side lights

Harle'

Here are some pictures of the different side lights used on Canadian trucks.
The first two are the type used on the early production #11 and #12 cab trucks the second two pictures are the side lights used on the later #13 cab trucks.

Hello
and thank's for your quick replys!

Gordon, here is a picture from my "poor" convoy light, (so early type), but on the front fenders, the only holes I can find is on the top ,it was rewelded, but still there, that the way I thought it was for a buttler light like Niels says, and not for the comon canadian type.

It was certainly use by the british army ,should it be possible to know more of this truck after the serial number

Cheers
Sylvain

Harle, the light in your picture likely wasn't original.

We might be getting a little confused, Harle.

For your particular CMP, both the front marker lights on the wings and the convoy lamp mounted underneath the rear of the vehicle, should be the early pattern conical, black rubber. To the best of my knowledge, all early, Canadian built CMP's for British Contracts were built using these conical rubber marker lights.

If your CMP has the Lucas style lights fitted, two possibilities: (1) they were changed late in service life in the British Army for some reason, or, (2) they were changed in civilian life. My guess would be (2). The Lucas style lights on the wings might be easier to adapt to turn signal lamps than either the early or late pattern CMP marker lights.

Hope this helps,

David

Default My 5 cents worth....

Hi David
Hi Harle

Very early cab 11 DID NOT have factory installed rubber marker light onthe front fenders and no black out lights for the rear axle........

They relied on the parking light inside the headlight bucket to be a marker light. My cab 11 never had marker lights on the front fenders. THe headligth buckets were Ford I beilive and had two bulbs.....on for the headlight mounted center and a smaller parking light installed half way on the side of the reflector..... documented in the early parts manual..... the samelight buckets with different mounting tabs were used on the Ford built UC.

My odd ball cab 11 never went overseas and was never retro fitted with all the blackout thingnies......

Cheers

I found this two pictures on the net from cab 12 CGT one with no lights at all , and the second with some light on the top position of the wing as david say certainly change or add by the british army.

Thanks again

I've seen pictures of jeeps in service with the Lucas/Butler sidelights, which would also be a mod to the standard as-delivered jeep. I'd imagine they were common in the workshops, and were easily on hand for a refurb or field modification.

The way vehicle stores were ordered, you may find that they are the general purpose version in the VAOS where the Canadian types would be vehicle specific, and thus harder to find without the right part number/parts list. Plus the scrap vehicle park would probably have had a bunch for recovery and reuse by enterprising squaddies. They were common to a lot of vehicles.

[s]That said, the hole in the wing in question doesn't look anywhere near big enough, so the normal canadian type look to be the right fitting unless you're modifying it.[/s]

Edit:Ah, just spotted the bit about re-welding, so it my have been bigger than it looks.

The convoy light looks original to me. I can't imagine anyone changing it outside of the forces and the build looks very similar to the early rubber sidelights.

Harle.

If you are referring to the small hole directly behind the two hex bolts in your Post #5, that is where the clip to hold the marker/side light wiring goes. The actual location of the light itself, is roughly in line with the two hex bolts, but much farther out towards the edge of the wing.

On the Cab 13's, the side marker lamp was more centered on the wing, between the side cowl and outer wing edge. If the mounting holes for the side marker have been filled over, you may be able to see where they used to be, underneath the wing.

David
