Default Canadian version .30 ammo box ?

Hi,

Please see this link:
http://www.mapleleafup.org/forums/sh...&threadid=5682

Refer the 6th post by Marco, a photo of 12 Manitoba Dragoons, D-Squadron, Blankenberge Belgium. Date September 9th, 1944.

Does anyone know the type of .30 ammo boxes on the left rear fender ? Isn't it Canadian version ammo box ? Does anyone have more close-up photo and dimension ? Thanks in advance.

Kurtis

Hello Kurtis,

I rather think that these boxes are food rations or just another sort of box used for stowage of crew items.
Storage room was always a hot item in a reconaissance regiment as they had to be self-supporting for a couple of days during their missions.
Also, the boxes are marked in a similar way as the Staghounds were, in this case B-Squadron-Headquarters,vehicle #3, which might indicate that these boxes had to remain with that vehicle.

The Canadian made .30 ammo boxes look very different from the ones on the Blankenberge photo.
I have a Canadian .30 cal box in its original color. I'll post a photo from it as soon as possible, I have it stored somewhere else.

Best regards,

Marco

Hi Marco,

Maybe the different make "Mfr" between Staghound and Fox ?
Your picture of the ammo box look likes more U.S. make.
The Fox A.C. has is own typical Canadian ammo boxes.

Hi Dirk,

The ammo box on my photo is of exactly the same design as the American made "cal. .30M1 ammunition box", only it was made in Canada (at least: I was told so).
It has that typical Canadian brown/green color.
There is no manufacturers name on the box.

It is said/writen that the Staghound was an American/British design but all the interior equipment is "American style".
I have never found any "British details" exept for the car being prepared to take the WS19 radio set.

Your ammo box is indeed completely different.
Quite remarkable how many different types of ammoboxes have been designed for use with the same machinegun!

Is this the only type of ammo box used in the Fox or is it the one mounted next to the machine gun ("ready box")?

Best regards,

Marco

Hi Marco,

We have no guns in the Fox, also not the 30 cal. ammo box
tray from the gun adapter. But we shall find'm, ever !
The 50 cal. Fox A.C. ammo box is also not "American style".

Mvg. Dirk

Default Boxes

Hi Marco & Dirk,

Thanks for the pictures. However, I still want to see close-up photo of what boxes actually were put on the rear fender of Staghound. As Marco mentioned before, those boxes are food rations instead of .30 ammo box. But I never seen those food ration boxes before until Marco posted the Staghound picture.
It is very interesting that all boxes were marked "3" on the covers. Thanks.

Kurtis
