Atkinson Alligator

Hi all,

Does any one now of any information regarding an Atkinson Alligator. I have tacken one on as a complete restoration project and am in need of some pictures / illistrations / spares (especialy tracks), infact anything.

I have done some home work and it appars only a handfull were made by Atkinson trucks UK some time between 1940 - 1945 for the sole purpase to retrieve blue streak missile parts during testing at woomera test range Australia. It is fiited with a ford flatehead V8 (21 stud) belived to be 90 -100 HP.

I have attached a photo of mine the first day I got it home.

If any one has some information it would be gratefully recieved.

Bryan,

I understood it was made by Atkinson's Of Clitheroe Ltd. and not by Atkinson Lorries and was produced in late 40's. Information from Bart Vanderveen's post war military vehicle directory.

Atkinson's of Clitheroe were well known for their grit spreading equipment seen on snow clearing trucks. Not sure if they are still in business now.

Hi all,

Here are some pics of my flatty fitted to my atkinson alligator.

I am getting pritty desperate for a carb prefurable a 30AAPI Twin choke solex and a pair of twin pulled water pumps if any one can help.

Other than setting the distributor on the ford Jig and fitting the missing items she should be ready to run.

I have the dual pulley water pumps for the Ford flathead engine. I don"t know if the pulleys are absolutely correct for your engine or not, but the pumps are NOS. I had to change the pulleys on these pumps for my T-16. I get $125 for each water pump. You can call me at $80-893-2201. Where are you located?

Thanks for that my pumps look as if they have been filled with cement!!

The only snag is I am on the other side of the water in the UK.

I had a pile of these pumps and it cost more than that to get one reconditioned for the SnoGo.

I also just sold a twin Solex to a guy down reading direction - along with the four spare V8s I had.

WHEELERUK is Malcolm who hails from around Newbury I think. If you get a message to him via e-bay he might sell you the Solex and there was one twin pulley pump too.....

I never heard anything else about the other Alligator that was round Crieff way, - it was complete except for the engine, even the ATKITRACKS were in good condition and the engine compartment smelled of diesel so it had been fitted with something other than the V8 anyway.

Thanks for that You did contact me regarding the possability of another alligator in scotland.

Well at the moment I am having my tracks recast. It looks to set me back aproxametly £7000 for the lot as all the rubbers have to be melted down. The castings then need to be remachined. New chain needs to be fitted to the castings and after the moulds have been made they then need to be recast.

What a expense but what is a tracked vehicle with out any tracks.

.... you can wled broken track parts indefinitely and use hard facing on the running surface.

If you have a look at this URL;

... and note the 'dismantled railway' legend on the map. The Alligator was sitting only 20 feet north of the original railway trackbed in a chicken yard ( I kid you not) associated with a second (third, fourth...) hand plant and equipment dump which I think was between 'Mains of ... ' and 'Duntanlich' It might actually have been along the line in either direction, but it was definitely just off the old railway trackbed south of the A95 between Crieff and Perth. The road is 17 miles long and the track is close to it for less than half of that. Now if only Nigel was around these days as it's closer to him than me. It will have shifted by now as I didn't see it last time I looked, but it might not be beyond tracking down.

Rod, if bryan does buy them, can you please make sure the puleys are exceptionally well wrapped and protected?

I twice posted Ford pumps, well wrapped, in cardboard containers, and TWICE they arrived with lumps knocked out the pulley edges as they seem to be very easily damaged ( or the post people play football with them)
