Chore Horse
I just acquired a Chore Horse for my C8 wireless but it's either 32v DC or 110v AC. Is this the proper generator for this application or if not then what's it for? It has a push button switch on the front that I presume would be for starting off the batteries and another dial switch that would probably switch from AC to DC.
It looks identical to the army units.

Thats interesting seeing those pictures we are looking for the chore horses for our c30 the ones that i have seen are somewhat differant from the one you have there they sit one on top of the other in the c30 and seem smaller than the one you show these things seem harder to find than the trucks we are also missing the rear body heater but have made a gas fired version but dont think ill will atempt to make a chore horse. it will be interesting to find out more about the one you have theres bound to be someone with the facts. out there, vic eaton uk.

From what I've seen, all the Chore Horses are basically the same. They all use the 5/8th HP Johnson Iron Horse engine with the same looking generator on them but they produce different voltages. Here's some info I came across:

The 32 and 110 volt one I got would work to charge 30 volts of batteries and I could just unhook the 110 v wires. I've got a line on a couple more so I'll see which models they are. I was given the one I got so I guess I could make do!

I see you are in Saskatchewan. I recall that Rosie's surplus in Saskatoon had a lot of the 32V ones for sale in the mid to late 80's/early 90s. I recall seeing some minty ones with lend lease decals still on them at $150 each, and run of the mill ones going for $75 each. I am sure a ad in the Western Producer or the Buy and Sell (if Saskatoon has this(?)) would net some results. It's hard to believe that something so common 10 years ago is now so hard, and sometimes expensive, to find. The chorehorses came with the C-42 radio kits. There were so many of these radios that rosie's actually dismantled them for the swithes and guages, and threw the rest away. They offerred me barrels of the cables towards the end.

The push button on Chorehorse Generators allows you to start the engine providing that the battery you are attached to still has enough life in it. The button effectively turns the generator into a motor by reversing the polarity.
These Generators and there British Army equivalents were manfactured and used for many years over here. Large numbers of unissued post war examples have been released in the UK over the last ten years. War time and post war examples are practicaly identical.

Thanks for that info didnt realise there were so many models the picture of one i saw that was in the C30 WIRE was a picture that rolf in NORWAY sent me it had a plexible exhaust that came out of those sliding doors on the drivers side rear body he did put the pictures on here for all to see but not sure how to see past pics he has the only other C30 RODIO VAN that we know of and his also has the petrol driven heater. lucky devil. dont you just love that searchlight ect . never seen anything like that here. im beginning to wish i lived in SASKATCHEWAN hope i have spelt that right ill be thinking that every where you look is that hard to find chorehorse. regards vic uk.

cold and chore horses
wELL I CANT IMAGINE
That level of cold its only -22 in our freezer it must be impossable to get anything done. didnt think the wide open spaces were as cold as that. my mate that lived in ALBERTA has now retired down to VANCOUVER ISLAND he used to talk about trees splitting down the middle from the cold its about 8 deg here at the moment and i have just reached for my overcoat. i must remember that carol of alexes when driving in the winter . i have been teaching myself to use a lariot so am looking for an old cow to rope. any ideas? vic uk.

Vic, I don't think there's a heater made that'd keep up at 30 below in a CMP. I see in Gregg's Military Vehicle Profiles the arctic heating kit was good for 20 below, then you needed the Russian kit for up to 40 below. You'd have to be dressed like you were going snowmobiling to survive at that temp. The day before yesterday my brother and I were out in the boondocks deer hunting, but that day it was a balmy 25 below.

As warm as a Gapper...
...Gapper being slang for a Saskatchewanian. Well that post was last night and it was -37 at the time here, it warmed up to a massive -25.4 in the middle of the day here for one hour and has since settled in around -32 with a 7 knot wind giving a wind chill or simulated cold feeling of -44 according to my computer chilldex. So -20's look nice when you're on wrong side of the number. YOu can still do stuff but you have to be careful and dress proper and be very cautious you don't get wet or too sweaty if you're not near a warm place. http://text.www.weatheroffice.ec.gc....ity_e.html?YSM

Got it going last week but not a lot of power so have pulled it down to put a set of rings in it. Bore is good less than .0005" wear in it. By the way its 21/8 bore by 44mm stroke makes it 100 cc.
