Default 12 volt igintion conversion

Does anyone feel able to recommend a supplier for a conversion kit for the igintion on the Carrier? I need the adapter unit that sits on the top of the distributor and replaces the coil. I think it carries the HT pick up and condenser. Also required will be a bracket to hold a conventional coil. cheers Andrew

Default ignition conversion

Andrew you could try Jolley Engineering(they have adverts on milweb) people that have had it done seem very happy...although I believe its quite expensive....I would rather stick with the original method as if it con ks out Ill be able to get it going again in a fashion whereas with the electronic...forget it...cheers malcolm

Andrew,
My Cab12 F60L has had the origonal coil cut apart and removed from its baseplate and the HT lead leading from another more modern coil fitted neatly into that baseplate and sealed with pitch from the oil coil. Works very well and no need for a large expensive outlay and no other mods to the dizzy. The new coil lies along the chassis out of the way and out of sight.

Looking at your photos, you have a big generator. Is that not a 12volt genny?

thanks guys..Yes it is a 12volt generator but there should be a step down resistor to reduce to 6v for the ignition. Cant think why they would have done that! Anyway, all I am after is the adaptpr plate which pick up the HT and low tension and takes them to the distributor in place of the old 6 volt coil. will search a bit more on the net...

Here is the part I think you are looking for. I have this kit on my carrier and its great. I jsut have to have a modern coil hooked up. It runs fine in either 6 or 12 volt. I switched the carrier to 12 volt when i first got it but last year I went back to 6volt. I had been great going back.

The Fords have a step down resistor to take the Ignition system down to 4 1/2 volts from 6 volts. Have a close look at your coil to see what voltage it is.( it may say on it)

Went back to 6 volt for originality. I also rebuilt the dash panel once I got the original fuse holder and such. With the proper wiring and grounding it starts just as easily as the 12volt does.

ooops, yes I meant Jordan......please bear with me, I am trying to get to grips with everyone. I have to say, that the 6v coil, with a lovely Ford Script on the top, started the Carrier perfectly. But that said, it did have 12v running through it. Anyway, I have now destroyed it and taken it to bits to try to make a 12v system. basically, by filing off the rivets that hold the coil to the base plate you can seperate the two. Then you can scoop out the inards of the coil which leaves you space to connect up the low tension and high tension systems. I have not quite finished this "mock up" but I am sure it will work . I have planned to bolt the original 6v coil back onto the Distributor and run the new HT lead out of the side of it. If it works I will add some photos, but to be honest, its probably best just to buy one of the purpose built adapters.!
