Question Diameter of wooden Chevrolet steering wheel?

I think this has come up before, but can anyone tell me what the diameter is of the wooden Chevrolet steering wheel?

I'm asking because they are easily confused with GMC steering wheels - I know one is larger than the other, but which one?

This one's diameter is approx. 45 cm or 18 inches:

Default Just Measured My HUP 18"

Hi Hanno

Just walked out to the shop and measured the wooden steering wheel on my HUP built June 1945. It measures across the spokes to outside edge as being 18 inches.

Slightly larger diameter if you measure across the wheel between the spokes.

Cheers Phil

Thanks Phil,

Now we need someone to measure up a GMC steering wheel - I think those are slightly larger.

Default Can check at the end of the month

Hi Hanno

If nobody turns one upto measure sooner, I'll look at are big rally July 23rd to 25th pretty sure there will be a CCKW with wood steering wheel there. But now to widen the question, is the wheel used on a DUKW which if I remember correctly were even larger.

Cheers Phil

The 18" diameter wheel is CMP. The DUKW wheel is 20" diameter. The CCKW I cannot confirm at the moment but the wood rim wheel may be the same as DUKW as I measured a moulded CCKW wheel as being 20" outside.

Thanks for the replies.

Meanwhile I found more info on the cckw.org forum including a CCKW steering wheel with tape measure and a link to a helpful French webpage: http://thierry.becker.free.fr/VolantsGMC.htm

The wheel pictured with the tape measure across it is a 4th type CCKW wheel which was used on late production vehicles.
As far as I know the only difference between this steering wheel and that used on the DUKW is the DUKW wheel has a pair of round headed nails driven into the rim not far apart to give the driver some indication of the straight ahead position when afloat.
