Last Avenger flying..
Keith..
Tough old bird finally going to retire...beautiful sounding engine.. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/video/aveng...163517337.html Interesting facts... In June 1943, future-President George H.W. Bush became the youngest naval aviator at the time[citation needed]. While flying a TBM with VT-51 (from the USS San Jacinto (CVL-30)), his TBM was shot down on 2 September 1944 over the Pacific island of Chichi Jima.[7] Both of his crewmates died. However, he released his payload and hit the target before being forced to bail out; he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Another famous Avenger aviator was Paul Newman, who flew as a rear gunner. He had hoped to be accepted for pilot training, but did not qualify because of being color blind. Newman was on board the escort carrier Hollandia roughly 500 mi (800 km) from Japan when the Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima.[8] The Grumman TBF Avenger (designated TBM for aircraft manufactured by General Motors) was a torpedo bomber developed initially for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and eventually used by several air or naval arms around the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_TBF_Avenger Enjoy...

Avenger
Thanks for sharing the video Alex!
Although your caption may be a little misleading as there are still quite a few of them flying around the world. There was a pair of them at Temora a couple of years ago, wonderful big birds!

story
I met a TBM turret gunner in 1978 . His daughter was out here as an exchange high school teacher . He came out to visit. He lived in Southbend where the Studebakers were built and he worked there . There was or is a Studebaker family and he said they held parties in their mansion and he met them .
Anyway, he was in the US Navy , based on Guadalcanal in a land based TBM squadron . He said they did patrols going out many hundreds of miles , and the biggest fear was becoming lost and ditching in the Pacific. He only spotted Jap aircraft once, in the distance , bombers . He said they always cut their aircrew uniform trousers down to shorts , the heat , and if in the water , made it easier to swim . Sharks were scary too of course . He was about 18 at the time and he said only skinny youngsters fitted into the TBM turret. He knew his vehicles , he said he pranged a Dodge command car while in the Solomons and described the sloping bonnet of a 1/2 tonner. Mike

Sure going to miss seeing them flying aroud the area here in the summer, nothing sounds better, you could hear them coming for miles.
Now do you want to know what it could have been bought for?

Let me guess: for the price of two weeks worth of fuel? The cost of an engine overhaul? H.

TBM- Mt. Hope, Hamilton.
I spent 3 years worth of weekends helping restore my father-in-laws TBM at War Plane Heritage in Hamilton,Ont. Never did get a ride in it. Too bad it burnt in the hanger a couple of years ago.

Avengers
There was an Avenger at Wanaka (NZ) this year. It was carrying Australian registration but I understand that it was staying in New Zealand as somebody over there had purchased it.
To see the Avenger flying and also an F4U Corsair being put through its paces were the highlights of the show. There is nothing to compare with the sound of a radial engine. David

I had a fly in Randal MacFarlane's Avenger a few years back (is this the one now in NZ?). Pretty docile old girl but the most interesting thing was how quiet it was in the air - you could almost hold a conversation unlike nearly any other big horsepower military aircraft.

Avenger
Hi Lang,
Yes I believe That the particular avenger That is now in NZ Was Randy's and before that if my memory serves me Correctly Was Plonky which was based at Wanaka. I was Recently Down In the Hunter Valley and Found one of the Late Steve Searles TBM'S Sitting at Maitland Airport With its wings folded out in the Weather. Cheers Matty Baker Hope You and Bev Are going Fine. |

Thanks Matt,
They really get around - suppose they cost a bit more than the wife's Corolla to own and run. Lang |
