Default Forum Etiquette

I would ask moderators, as if they don't have enough work already, to encourage existing members to put some kind of geographical location on their membership profile.

Also that all new members use a real first and last name and encourage all existing members to perhaps add their real name in a signature block so that their posting history can be preserved.

I really feel that transparency in the cyber world is important.

In real life, I have spoken to forum members on subjects that I would not have been able to engage them on if I didn't know their name. "Slippery Sid" just doesn't cut it anymore for me.

I regret that I am likely to be ridiculed as a dinosaur but I believe in saying how I feel and that is honesty.

Thanks for taking the time to read, I don't expect you to agree.

Hi Robin, No, you are not on your own. I agree! There are however those that have a reasonable reason for using a nom de plume.
I also make (rightly or wrongly) a judgement on the location (like just "USA") and if I think it's too vague, I just don't tender any answers to asked questions.

Default Name and location

When I joined this forum years ago one stipulation was that I used my real name, aliases were not allowed. I do realize that some people are uncomfortable with using their real name, but a location would be helpful if items are listed for sale, etc.

There are very, very, few persons who need their name suppressed. maybe they should have two, a nom de plume for their controversial posts that might jeopardise their employment and their own name for all the clean posts.

I used to have a handle I used. But I've migrated away from it. Even on the G503 forum where my handle is Rustman, I still sign my posts with Matt so people know who they are talking to. Location is certainly helpful too. I think mine is a reasonable location. Well some people don't consider West Virginia reasonable. But I'm sticking to it. I'm minutes away from the site of John Brown's raid if you are into that sort of thing.
