Garbage can
A couple of weeks ago I purchased a new surplus garbage can. The box is dated 1961 but inside the lid I was surprised to see it broad arrow marked and dated 1954.

And "General Steel Wares, Ltd" are well known as the wartime manufacturers of numerous items of tinware for CMPs and other military vehicles, such as 2 Gal POL cans, funnels, and toolboxes, all marked and dated as "GSW".

The funny thing about that C/l\ on the lid is that by 1953, it was obsolete, having been tossed in 1948/1949. Perhaps the manufacturer was simply following older drawings which included the marking.

1950s C Broad Arrows
Yeah it seems the C Broad Arrow hung on with a few items, here is a survival fishing kit from 1954 that has the mark. I like that garbage can.

In the US Reeves made a lot of cans for the army. They seem to have been used with the immersion heaters for cleanup in field messing. Quite heavy duty compared to today's hardware store ones.

So, over the last few years the stocks that were held at the federal level through Emergency Preparedness Canada or who ever they morphed into have been shedding kit and property.
There has been a host of gear sold, most of great quality and often based on a milspec. Cardon Tools (no relationship ties) have bought stock and their website and FB account are well worth watching as things change so quickly.
