car, light recce Mk III
Hello,
According to the WE tables of a Engineer Field Company, it had two of these: car, light recce Mk III with .303 m/g Any clue what this is? In the 23rd RCE War Diary, Major Tucker refers to these as Scout Cars. I don't think that it is a jeep because it lists them as 5 cwt. Thanks! John |

Re: car, light recce Mk III
John;
The top picture is of a Car, Light Reconnaissance (British Humber) MkIII The bottom picture is of a Car, Light Reconnaissance (Canadian Otter) MkI They were both used by R.C.E. Field Squadrons and Field Companies, although the Otter was designed as a Canadian replacement for the British Humber MkIII, it's performance wasn't has good as the Humber's. The .303 MG you refer to is the .303 Bren LMG that both types of cars were/could be equiped with. Cheers

Thank you!
Where did you read that they were used in RCE coys? And if you say it was in `Canada's Fighting Vehicles 1939 to 1945', I will scream. I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of that book for awhile now. |

Book
John, the RCA kitshop, bought mine there two years ago for about 20 bucks. If I remember correctly, had permanently on sale as they were trying to rid their inventory of an excess of them.

I just got an email from the 23rd RCE recce officer, Lt. Kennedy. (I forwarded the pictures to him, thanks!) He said that he was offered a Humber, but didn't like the fact that it was 7' high - too big of a target. He preferred using a jeep instead. The Humber was traded by Major Tucker for another jeep.
I having no luck using the link. I can't seem to find the RCA kit shop. Am I blind or just plain stupid? |
