M38A1CDN2 Frame Problems
Hi Guys,
I seem to recall that sometime back there was a discussion about the CDN2's/3's having a problem weakness on the front part of the frames. Next month (February), the entire front end of my jeep is coming off for an engine swap. Figure this is the perfect time to do the frame inspection too. What do I need to look for, and what needs to be done for this problem to be corrected? Thanks Richard 1967 M38A1CDN2 7105 96879 CFR 67-07832 |

Not the front, but more to the back. Just forward of the front spring mounts for the rear axle the frame tends to crack on Cdn2 and earlier Jeeps. There is a little hole drilled through the side of the frame for a spring type retainer clip holding a brake line in place....the crack usually goes through there, but may originate at the spring hanger itself.
The Cdn3 boxed the frame in that area, and for the most part that cured the problem. Another area of concern is the steering bell-crank mount. They would put stress on the cross member. Pretty much all of them had been welded, albeit poorly. |

Rob,
Was there a Field Maintenance Order to inspect these areas for cracks and to repair them. What do you need to do to repair and/or add to keep this from happening? Mine was owned by the army till the end of 1987. |

There is a CFTO on the cracking at the bellcrank.....it was considered repairable.
There was not one for the rear cracking. It would result in a PCC (Condemnation) request, and after approval the jeep would get used for cannibalization to keep others going.I suppose some maintenance facilities might repair the frame by fish-plating and boxing, but there was no specific instruction for this. Trucks like these were constantly driven to the limits of their capabilities and some just did not survive it. Last edited by rob love; 30-01-19 at 13:59. |

Rob,
I will check these areas very carefully for any cracks or damage, while the engine is being swapped out. Thanks... Rich |
