WoW. Nice. But I think I like the subdued olive drab tones to the glaring white. Very nice presentation though.

My KLR250.
Picked it up yesterday in Mont-Laurier Qc.
I had confirmation that it comes from Alberta. (Suffield, Wainwright?)
Won't be easy to find exactly what unit it comes from....

Engine rebuilt 2 years ago...perfect running condition. Only needs a replacement horn! (Wich I ordered last night) Also missing its original tool-kit...I'll also have to re-install the military ''crash-bar'' that goes in front of the engine. (fortunately included in the sale)
I only wish I can find some more infos (pictures) of these little bikes.
I'd like to put some markings on it, but that can wait. I'm not gonna make it another MP motorcycle just because ''it looks cool''.

Well this is very kind of you Ed Storey!
I didn't expect that one today.

So it was an ''infantrybike''. And located in Petawawa.
I'll see if I can find any more infos on these bikes on my side and will of course share it with you.
This is where Facebook has a first chance with me to prove it can do little miracles...And I just wrote an email to the RCR Museum. Who knows?

Thanks a lot

The next challenge with these bikes, will be to find what markings are supposed to be painted...if any!
Probably a canadian flag somewhere?
Won't be easy to collect infos on this one as most military personal have never seen them!
I know the MP bikes in Valcartier had markings. But what about the other 73 bikes?

Ed,

would it be the smaller size CFR plate or the regular sized one?

It would appear by your photo that perhaps there is now a smaller license plate in the DND system. The hole locations on your p[late would preclude the possibility of putting the little maple leafs onto the corners. I'll have to look those up when I get back from holidays and see when they were introduced into the system.

All DND plates are in a way hand-made. They come as blanks with only the word Canada on them. The numbers and little leafs are applied by either the base supply major equipment section, or (officially not supposed to happen anymore) the transport section. There were early plates in which the maple leafs were embossed on the plate, and as well early plates had DND embossed instead of Canada, although these were supposed to be later modified with a CANADA plate rivetted over the DND.

I say that the units "officially" are not supposed to be making plates themselves, because if a plate is lost or stolen, then the vehicle is supposed to be assigned a new CFR and the old one becomes redundant. However, in reality, a new plate is usually made up and thats the end of it.

Default Cfr 10908 klr 250

It is now a few days since another military vehicle roller coaster started to unfurl around me.

It was one evening last week after exchanging PMs with Grant Hopkins in BC who owns a KLR ex USMC about the KLR I had bought a year ago in an evening of enthusiasm and blind desire and a massive lack of caution. I bought a green bike that was a civvy bike that had been added to with every known issue part.

It was a replica or fake depending on which way you presented it.

I said to Grant in my PM that I thought it unlikely that I would ever find a complete genuine ex CF machine.

Well, the passage of half an hour proved me wrong when I found one Kijiji in Alberta a listing for one such machine. You could have knocked me over with a feather, I was dumbstruck.

I sent an email to the seller and within a few hours we were talking by phone and had struck a deal to purchase.

It as is often the case under trying circumstances that Matthew Reid is selling this machine and I recognise that his misfortune is my gain and that I am buying a machine that has been someones pride and joy.

This has become so very clear in all the attention to detail that he has lavished into researching everything about the machine. The wealth of knowledge that he has acquired and the lengths he as gone to is brilliant.

Matthew bought the bike from CADC directly and has not repainted the machine so all the markings are without question genuine. Can anyone comment on the call sign on the fuel tank? is it 915 or 91S?

I am going to start posting some pictures here and I have a few more to post tonight.

Once again, my deepest thanks to Matthew who is an absolute gent to deal with.

I am now working on the shipping.

Good show Robin

I saw the ad on Kijiji. I thought you might be in play for it. Looks like a great machine. Even the panniers are there.

Thanks for the comments, I am very ahppy after letting myself get burned last year on the wanna be KLR.

Yes very complete and the former owner has sent loads of information with it and there are spares included as well.

I emailed with a friend who is former PPCLI and a generally knowledgeable bloke and he explained this:-

"Callsign 91 is applied to different entities depending on the level (Formation/HQ/Manoeuvre Unit/Sub-unit etc.)

In the context of a unit in this case 1st, 2nd or 3rd Bn PPCLI, C/S 91 would be applied to the Signals Platoon. 91 Signals Officer, 91 A, B are for Remote Rebroadcasting Sites/Dets for example.

91S was Signals Stores. See below, it changes over time so the date the kit was in use will change the context. For example 91R used to be Signals Repair, it has morphed into sub callsigns for each LCIS tech in that section.

If we are talking the 90s it is safe to say it was a Sigs platoon rover/liaison/delivery platform.

If anyone can shed any more light I am interested to know more

This is the first KLR I bought like 9-10 years ago. (Sold it...but found another one last summer). The first one came from Valcartier. It was used by the MP and had a number of markings on it. On the front of the mudguard, was a nato vehicle i.d.
(Not sure what you call it in english...)
The bike I bought last summer had its paint redone (in a professional paint-shop)
and also had its engine rebuilt. After a good tune-up, it actually runs like new.

From what I can find, there appears to be no "standard markings" for those little bikes. I chose to use the same pattern for my 1RCR bike as for the MP's bike. BTW...I tried to contact the 1RCR museum for some help, but no answer.

I also renewed the straps that keep the panniers closed. My idea was to simply replace them with new olive color straps, but I noticed that the straps were originally black and had simply faded under the sun. I restored the color using some fabric dye. Same for the tool bag that goes on the mudguard. I still need to find a tool-kit...

Hello all,

I need a little help here: I realised that the front of the B.O. drive on my KLR was some kind of ''home-made'' painted resin cover.

So in order to fix it (by making a new cover) i need someone to show me a close picture of his own KLR b.o. drive.
I know this the best place to get that picture!

Thank you,

Eric

I have no idea if I'll be in Waterloo...But I'm a machinist and for now if I can simply see closely what exactly the cover looks like, I can easily make a replica.
This is what the previous owner made. Let's call it a "nice try" but I'm not going anywhere with that! Thanks for your kind offer anyway. Maybe we'll meet in Waterloo.
Where are you from? Ho I just saw: Kingston. Not that far!

Default Made my own plate...

Well, it's not perfect, but since I don't see where or even how I can find a real one...
So I decided to make my own license plate.

Don't worry and don't be sorry! I've been busy myself and it's not like it keeps the klr from running.
I made a hitch carrier (goodbye trailer) and a fake license plate. I actually almost went to the Odessa meeting...Maybe next time.
You can actually simply let me see a picture of the correct b.o. drive and I can make a copy. I made my license plate from a piece of sheet aluminum i machined.
