A Web(b) experiment
I've just discovered a piece of software which has become my instant favourite. It's from Adobe and is called Lightroom which is available on both Windows and Macintosh platforms.
What it does is allow you to catalogue all your images, both photographs and scans and to arrange them by keywords which you input for each image. I've chosen to place all my images (after backing them up of course) onto a separate USB2 drive of 250Gb so I can have vast quantities instantly available. So far my library consists of over 20,000 images and it handles this with elegance and ease. Another great feature is the ability to quickly create web galleries of selected photographs (you need your own server space of course). I've added one experimentally here as a flash gallery of images from Ringwood Timber and Trading Co CMPs from the early 1970s. The drawback I have found so far is I haven't found a way to individually caption the images yet. Be interested in feedback. Does anyone else use Lightroom?

Very Impressive
Keep up the great work. The album was very interesting indeed.

Interesting piece of software. I wonder if it would be more useful than my current manual system of going through the land rover images I have (and there are a lot of them).
What does the software look like whne using it? Like the online gallery?

Check out ACDSee . I have used this for several years and it does allow yoou to record caption material (although I don't know if this can be displayed with the image?
Also, Photoshop will create a web gallery for you under the automation tool.

... I downloaded Lightroom a few weeks ago. Looks pretty simple and easy to use. You can alter, resize etc. a lot of images in a automated batch mode. Haven't looked heavy into it...
Photoshop is great but "little bit more expensive" than Lightroom ;-) For resizing pics for my website I use free irfanview. I'll creat afterwards a flash gallery with jAlbum, also free. I have to say that I haven't categorised my pics yet. Should probably do so... Greetings Chris

I have used ACDSee for many years. Between my wife and I we've processed about 35000 pictures over the last few years. I use ACDSee as a management tool to sort and catalogue. It also does good frame captures from video.
Photoshop is still used to correct images and do photo archival work. I have a "test" copy of Lightroom but haven't tried it yet. Maybe I will now and compare the two. |
