Default Thank you

Andrew,

Thank you ! The dimensions are different than the stiffeners used in the lower cabs.

I shudder at the thought of trying to gather the required information to restore an old vehicle such as the Lynx without the support of people such as yourself, the MLU forum, and the internet.

Could I trouble you for one more set of measurements? The reinforcing patch that goes over the latch area?

Thanks again, Peter

Peter, I am missing the centre piece extension, but on the main lid there is no evidence of reinforcing? , but I do note the pictures of Rick's Lid post 563 and the second and 3rd pic in post 561 that shows a reinforcement, the lid I showed was also from a MK1, Cheers Andrew

Default Another step

Guys,

My fabricator, Andy, was able to faithfully replicate the bullet splash shield surrounds, forge a set of hinges and mount the cast fuel filler covers. I'm biased, but it certainly looks good.

Thanks to MLU members from Australia, Canada, England and New Zealand I now think I have enough information to create the drawings to fabricate the front storage bin.

Just to double check everything I've decided to assemble a wooden version to test the dimensions and fit. Don't want to get ahead of myself, but I'm getting closer to paint.

Peter

Default Small stuff

Guys,

More small stuff. I suppose this entire restoration consists of a series of small steps. Had the new document holder and WS 19 spare parts holder welded in place. Slowly filling up.

Outstanding Peter.
When I first got into MV restoration I knew very little. Over the course of time I picked up the skills, as have you.
I remember Dad telling me not to look at the project as one big piece- that in itself would be overwhelming.
Rather, as he suggested, look at it as a whole bunch of smaller pieces. Envision each as its own sub assembly, each a project of its own. Take bite size pieces. Before you knew it I have a baffed out 12 cab Ford CMP fully restored and running. 21 months.

Default Mock up

Guys,

Mocked up the new front storage bin that Andy fabricated. More work to do on the lids and it's extensions, but definitely looks the part. Changes the appearance quite a bit.

Default Talent

Barry,

I don't have the skills for fabrication, but I do seem to have a talent for finding proud, talented and enthusiastic people such as Andy Pomorski. The front storage bin looks great, now to remove it and have it blasted and primed.

Default Last time ???

Guys,

The nose armour is back on, for what I hope is the last time. One needs to be a contortionist to deal with the nuts inside the frame rails,
The paint certainly changes the Lynx's appearance. Now to remount all the bits and pieces.
Then to finalize the unit and formation markings along with the other odd markings.

No more winter white just in time for spring..... What paint are you using? The colour looks really nice.

Looks great Peter. Can't wait to see it in the flesh.

Default Membership rewards

Guys,

I am trying to make this restoration as accurate as possible, and it has only been possible thanks to MLU members such as yourselves who have provided information and access to parts.
I was very fortunate to have significant hidden portions of the Lynx that retained original paint samples. I used an enamel Olive Drab Flat that only needed a minor amount of ‘tweaking’.

Default Nice touches

Guys,

The small pieces can and are just as rewarding as the larger components. A nice example are the two Ford emblems, one on the front storage bin and the second on the radiator armour.

Dave,

The Lynx wouldn't be what it is without the engine that Doug Lavoie found for me and the great rebuild that you did. This journey has been so satisfying and the caliber of people that I have met along the way so good, that I hope it lasts for years to come.

Default New period pictures

Guys,

Receiving new to me, period pictures of Lynxes, in service, is akin to Christmas.
The pictures are of RCD Lynxes in NW Europe when the RCD was the Corps reconnaissance regiment. The first picture shows that the RCD did place their front unit and formation signs on the front storage bin rather than the glacis plate. Makes life easier for me since I much prefer this position. Also the fact that the vehicle number was not always placed inside the D squadron identifier.
The second picture shows that the RCD also mounted 0.30 Brownings on their Lynxes. To date, I've only found photographs of the 12th Manitoba Dragoons with 0.30 Brownings on their Lynxes. I see they have now relegated their Bren gun to the rifle rack above the 19 set and freed up more floor space.

Peter,

Just came across this picture on the IWM collections website. It's not much of help marking wise, though

Picture taken in Italy 7 febuary 1945. NA 22176. New Zealand division.
source: https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/i...ject/205204748

According to the description it's a Daimler Scout car, but to me it looks more like a Lynx. Also interesting to see the dummy barrel on the M31 has been cut down and the frontmost bogie seems to have been replaced by a later M4 style one.

Default Thanks

Alex,

Thanks for another great picture. It certainly looks the part, however the only time I've seen the Ad Hoc welded flat bar storage on the sides were on Dingoes.

Regardless, it's an iconic picture. The struggle with mechanical problems and the challenges faced with the weather were part of the grind that all the troops had to overcome.

I'll share another of my favorites. While it's not a Lynx the look on the troopers faces speaks volumes.

Peter

Default Getting there

Guys,

Andy fabricated the last of the storage bins for the rear fenders. His usual great work. Now to have them sand blasted and epoxy primed.

Now one of the new front wheel brake cylinders decided to spring a leak, now to find out why. Usual two forward, one back.

Default Brakes

Chris,

I used new replacement parts when I did the brakes. I don't think the parts are the issue. I suspect my workmanship and some sloppy copper washers. I've got the proper sized copper washers coming and I'm hoping that with a good cleanup and assembly that the leak will disappear.

Thanks, Peter

Just keep turning the bolt in tighter and tighter and tighter until it snaps off. Then you know for next time to stop just before that point.

I started a thread way back about copper washers, and in fact on the lynx here at the museum. I went with DOT5 (silicone) brake fluid, and was having a real hard time getting the copper gaskets to seal. There just didn't seem to be an appropriate torque. I think Barry Churcher related that he would not use the new ones, but rather the old ones worked well.

I tired tighter, new washers, mil-spec washers, and even tried to anneal them. In the end, I cheated by applying a thin thin smear of silicone RTV to the copper washers. It worked. But I am not suggesting that to anybody, as it is not an approved method of sealing. And it might only work with DOT5...I cannot say what DOT3 or 4 would do to RTV.

Copper work hardens to the point where it can crack. They should be annealed before use, unless they look fresh. The old washers (in good cond.) will work fine if annealed. (heated up to red hot)

Jordan if you stop at the "easy feeling" and back it off a bit, maybe no one will find out???

Default Colour question

Guys,

I'm about to apply the Unit and Formation signs on the Lynx. Would anyone be able to help me by identifying the correct shades of green and blue for the Unit serial.

Judging by the pictures that I have been able to source, the quality and location of the Unit Serials varies tremendously.

Thanks, Peter

Peter, difficult to judge from printed materials due to all the variations in the ink tones.
Personally I'd go for a royal blue and something like John Deere green. Sure someone will correct me on this but I'd just experiment and find what looks right to your eye. I'm sure they weren't too picky during the war as to an exacting colour match.
Please, just please, make sure you do a correct maple leaf for the formation sign. Matter of fact, I think that I still have the template from mine that I would be glad to donate to your cause...

Hi Peter,

Further to Chris' comments on the Maple Leaf decal, a number of years back a large supply of the original wartime water transfer decals of these surfaced and were being sold somewhere here in Canada. It was a Toronto company that made them. Their name and address were on the backing paper as I recall. Some might still be floating around out there.

In addition (and I could be getting senile) I think fairly recently, somebody was looking into reproduction of that decal. Not sure what came of that but I think it was discussed on a thread here on the forum at the time.

In the meantime, keep up the good work!

David

I think the company was called Canadian Decalcomania or something to that effect. I believe I have some decals at home with their name on them .

Nothing looks worse on a beautiful (or even a non-beautiful) WW2 vehicle that the stylized 1960s Liberal party maple leaf as part of a tactical sign.

Edited to add: Yep, that is pretty close to the correct company name, and they were out of TO. https://www.google.ca/search?safe=ac....0.j1EjCrGJu8c
