sender
You can measure the sender unit OHM range with a multimeter , but you need a sender unit in good working order . The sender unit should clean up Ok with some suitable solvent , I drill a tiny hole in the lid and spray electrical contact cleaner inside , the wiper arm can become dirty.
The gauge is the balanced coil type from memory. There are two bobbins inside the gauge that are wound with very fine fragile wire .

Hello Bob,
I have changed the title of all your threads as most of them list only "C15 No 12 Cab". Please add your question to the title to be more specific. That way you have a bigger chance members will note your request and reach out to help. HTH, Hanno

Fuel Gauge Sender Ohm Reading
Hi Bob
Just found my notes and measure the sender on my C60S. First I had a real problem getting a steady reading using a digital meter the numbers just keeps changing. Had to use a older analog volt ohm meter. From my restoration notes empty is 3-5 ohms while full is 35-40 ohms. Measured a pair of NOS AC Model-C got an empty or arm all the way down as 2 ohms and full or all the way up as 30-31 ohms. Can anybody else confirm these figures? So we can add this to the knowledge base. Note my C60S is a Pattern 13 with the commercial dash. Cheers Phil

I'm quite sure the nominal range for the fuel sender/gauge pairing for the Chev CMPs is 0-30 ohms. https://www.fillingstation.com/artic...ugetesting.htm
I'm also quite sure that the values for Ford CMPs were different as each started out using their own civilian pattern gauges and matching senders. I'm not sure what happened when Ford went to the round gauges but believe Chevrolet kept the 0-30 range. I don't have manuals to hand to confirm this but will add more when I get the chance to check. |

Thanks guys I guess my confusion was that I have a collection of both Chev and Ford gauges.

Ford
From memory the civilian Ford fuel gauge system is a different concept, the sender and gauge units both have a coil surrounding a bi-metal arm and breaker contacts. With current flowing, the coil will heat up and the arm would bend and open the contacts .The gauge pointer is attached to the bi-metal arm and it will move in sync. with the sender bi-metal arm They had a capacitor fitted at the sender unit in order to reduce the spark interference to wireless sets ? . I often thought how weird it was to have a pair of sparking contacts inside a petrol tank ! The sender is a sealed unit but still , it all seems a strange way of doing things.
