Default Chevy Engine

Hi Guys,
Is there among you somebody, who knows Chevy or GMC engines well? I am very curious about why the famous Chevy or GMC six-in-line engine is called Stovebolt? Up to now all the answers I got were a nonsenses. Please, help me.
Best regards not only to Chevy fans,
Jan Mostek, Prague, Czech rep.

Default Stovebolt six

Hi Jan, The name 'stovebolt six' is an Americanism and I understand that it came about because of the similarity between the slotted screws used to secure the side plate and oil pan on these engines to the screws that were used to secure parts of slow combustion (wood burning) stoves together.

Some people have been so unkind as to suggest that it was because of the similarity in the sound of the engine when it was running and somebody shaking a bucket of stovebolts. They were probably Ford people.

In North America the slotted head bolts are commonly known as stove bolts.
