Cooma Motor Fest
Took the truck to Cooma Motor Fest today meet some really great military vehicle owners and a few shiny car marshling arseholes.
I think areshole may be a little polite but I will stick with that for now. On arrival waited 20 minutes to get in the gate, at the entrance gate I was told to take my truck around the back via a different road. Once I did this I then found that I had to rejoin the line at the inner gate, now I was behind all the shiny cars that 10 minutes before I was in front of. Gate two the Oval Got to gate two and was told by the shiny car areshole marshall to take my truck out the back away from the oval and find a spot for it next to the back fence. I pointed out that there were a good dozen military vehicles on the oval, to which he replied you will not get there we need room for cars. By now I was pissed off and replied I will go over the shiny cars and drove in while the prick kicked the dirt. Now I had prepaid a $25.00 booking fee to be part of the event just like the shiny cars but I was really feeling not welcome at the event because my vehicle was painted matt green and bigger. Registration Iwent to see another shiny car marshling areshole to register my attendance and was told he only did cars somone would be down to do trucks latter this never eventuated and as I did not have inside knowledge on who to see about registration I missed out all together. This did not seem to matter anyway as military people who did find the marshell responsible found out as tropheys were being given out that there vehicles had been overlooked anyway. Insult did not end here In talking to car entrants and found that those who paid on the day recieved a $10 discount on entry. The event published a penalty for not paying early or maybe as they say in the trade "mates rates". Now I have been to several country show events were ribbons are handed out for best this and that and never once have I seen a military vehicle awarded any prize despite some great restorations or original vehicles. Antique vehicle owners recieve consessional registration fees and we all join car clubs that have a mix of vehicle types. Only the major city centres have enough membership of green machines to form standa alone clubs. I know in my local club there is an underlying tension between the Matt and Shiny car owners but in general to date we have pulled together to advance the whole club. Now a point I would like to make is in regards to Corowa every year people bring down a variety of machine some freshly restored others have seen years of faithfull use. I would not mind seeing a competition run for those who wish to nominate there work for judging by people who know and appreciate what they are looking at, what do people think about this? Heres a few photos from Cooma less the areshole of course

Corowa 08 Judging
The idea of judging a number of vehicles for an award at Corowa is not a new one. There are already prize categories for differing things.
The actual idea of entering a vehicle in a special category (like a people's choice) to be judged against others which may be completely different (eg: jeep against a Saladin) is fraught with complications. There will always be concerns over bais, vehicle types, value, originality etc. Once you get over those hurdles, there is always the entrants that are better known as major collectors from within the country, possibly scooping the prize pool regularly. Then there is the budget issue. How much would have been spent etc? I can definately state that the Army Museum would not enter this category if it were to be introduced. We aim to remain neutral and non-political at this event. After all it is held in our own back yard so to say and we wish to remain welcome. Hence we refuse any preferential treatment, reduced fees etc. Having said that the committee are there for the participants, contact the committee direct and ask. If there is enough interest something could and should be done. |

At the Corowa Swim-In we introduced the following form to encourage people to vote for people they think deserve awards. When you come to the Information Site (next year it will be a caravan instead of a tent) you will be given a package of information and included is a Voting Form. We encourage all attendees whether they participate with a military vehicle or not to provide us with their suggestions related to the following:
VOTING FORM Please put this form in the Suggestion Box by 12 midday on Saturday 15th March 2008. At 1200hrs this box will be cleared and any forms received after this will not be included. We need time to count and organize the results for the presentations on Saturday night. Awards: Please give the person’s name and the reason for them to be considered for an Award. 1. Mal Mackay Memorial Award: This award will be given to an individual who appears to get the most enjoyment out of being at Corowa. Name: Reason why: 2. Hard Luck award: Name: Reason why: 3. Breakdown Award: Name: Reason why: 4. Longest distance driven in a military vehicle: Name: Number of Kilometres driven: 5. Encouragement Award: Name: Reason why: 6. People’s Favorite Choice: For your favorite vehicle attending this year. Vehicle rally number: Type of Vehicle: Suggestions for a Theme for 2012 Suggestions for places to visit in 2009 If anyone has other suggestions for awards please contact me prior to the event. By the way it is only 4 months until the event next year. If you haven't returned your entry form please return it ASAP. If you do not have a copy send me a message and I can forward one to you. Due to the theme for 2008 - Year of the Tracked Vehicle, there is a change of location for the Swap Meet. The Corowa Rotary Club will be hosting the event at the Corowa Airport. Due to feedback from the 2007 event the swap meet will commence at 9.45am (after the parade) and stall holders will not be able to enter the Airport until 8am to set up their stalls. There will be participants residing at the Airport with their Tracked Vehicles and they will be leaving the area at approx 7.30am to attend the Street Drive which will commence from Ball Park at 9.00am sharp. The cost for stallholders will be $5. Buyers and lookers will not be charged. This change has occurred due to Insurance reasons. Please inform people who attend the swap meet.

I'm with Robert, sounds like we should have gone over with you. Looks like a brilliant show. And as they say, the look on Rusty's face when battling against the chrome...... priceless! (pity to miss it).
Is it an illusion, or does Rusty Jnr look like he wants an Antar more than Dads truck? Ben
