Interesting...

VAOS section WY is electrical test equipment, and most of the components have Army stores codes on them. Except for the valves, which are Air Ministry.

The VR65 is perfectly ordinary, but the VR137 is an EC52 VHF triode (good for up to 300 or 400 MHz).

It's Army from the general design and stores codes, intended for use in the field, not a workshop. Possibly radar related?

Chris.

What on earth?!?!?!!!!

That looks like a waistbelt attachment as used with WS18, early WS62, etc., and the two plates with holes may be for shoulder straps. If so it's definitely meant to be carried around while being used and was probably battery powered.

Chris.

It is a puzzle as the device seems to have a power transformer, socket for rectifier & filter cap. Front panel has a mains switch. There is only one connector and it doesn't appear to have anything to do with RF frequencies.

Can you provide a photo of the chassis under the tubes?

Louis Meulstee answerd :

Hello Daniel,
its a test instrument (RF oscillator) for an early British Army Radar system operating on 1 1/2 meter. I do not know the type though It might be Elsie, a searchlight radar or some other sort of radar used by the Army. I have somewhere here a quite similar item. You may recognise this by the Vocabulary number WY.
I hope you are happy with the answer to this unit.

Best regards,

Louis
