Default Dutch Tulip Festival Ottawa 13-15 May 2016

Dutch Tulip Festival Ottawa Friday 13 May - Sun 15 May 2016

The Dutch Tulip Festival will again be taking place in Ottawa Fri 13 May - Sun 15 May 2016. Jeff Mosher will be the Period Military Vehicle Coordinator.

Details are sketchy at this time as we are waiting to here back from the organizers but some info for now:

Location will be the green area at Lansdowne Park on 450 Queen Elizabeth Drive in Ottawa right next to where the Ottawa Red Blacks play. Satellite photo of Google Maps shows the area under construction but that is now complete.

https://www.google.ca/maps/@?hl=en

Same concept as last year - Period Second World War Military encampment with displays.

German re-enactors and vehicles welcome once more.

They will be feeding and watering us again with the idea that food must be delivered to us or served close by our displays due to the amount of the crowd.

There may be a battle again like the 2015 event. This is being discussed.

There will be some compensation for those who transport military vehicles to the show.

Organizers are looking in to shower facilities.

There will be AC Power.

Organizers want to have a 40s USO style dance on Saturday night.

Organizers are looking in to having some form of Victory parade(s) in the area with Veterans.

Organizers are looking for a secure area for parking of civilian vehicles.

Military Vehicle Coordinator is Jeff Mosher. Contact him for a Military Vehicle Registration form at ctfww2event@gmail.com

More to follow when the info is conveyed to us.

All's quiet for a venue which is only three weeks away...
My missus was just asking about this event and it's odd that there has not been much advertised.

That depends. I think Jeff's company still owns the property. Whether there is access is another question. The new venue is much closer to downtown, and therefore space is more restricted.

Seems like spotty and shallow passage of information is the norm for events such as this, so many great ways (like MLU and Canadiansoldiers) to "put the word out" other then Facebook or keeping info within a small inner circle of the cool kids.

I have put a question on the events Facebook group asking for one of the organizers to post some more info here for the "select" MLU crowd. The facebook page only has 178 people.

I have requested Jeff Mosher to post updates from the organizers as he gets them first hand from them. As usual, the organizers are slow to respond to our requests.

As this is a new location the festival organizers are still working out parking and shower facilities etc. This information will be disseminated when we receive it. It will come, there will be trailer parking. The date and location have been advertised and an e-mail link for those requesting the form to register has been posted by Terry. (We had no way of posting an interactive version of the form here) We have not had many requests via e-mail however. If you are planning to take part please get your registration forms in now.

Default Details

Thanks, Jeff
May I respectfully suggest that few have registered because they don't have the necessary details?! That certainly goes for us out-of-towners. The senior municipal, provincial and federal civil servants working on the planning might like to pull the proverbial finger out - we now have less than 3 weeks to know if we can attend or not. You are the messenger so no aggro aimed at you!

Cheers
David

Mr. Hunter, events like this boil down to "needs' and "wants", an event like the Canadian Tulip festival NEED to deliver while volunteer unpaid participants WANT to assist by giving up their time and equipment to see it succeed and build value into it. So that said the OMVA guy can push the issue and essentially say give the CTF a timeline to respond to. Yes the thing is run by government types and bureaucrats who just about sh!t themselves when forced to make a decision but there is zero excuse why info is so damn slow and arrives at the eleventh hour when they had a whole year to sort out the details.

For the record, CTF staff are volunteers. None are government employees. The problems stem from gaining permissions from local commercial establishments and the City. Right now the hold up is securing parking from TD Place and determining the location of the irrigation system under the lawn so we can complete the camp layout. The volunteer guy doing that has been out of town on other business but is back now and will have that info for us this week. We have parking for flatbed trailers on site but we are working on securing more. As in previous years there is overnight camping, meals and water provided. Be set up by 0830 Saturday and Sunday morning. Open hours are 0900 to 1700hrs. You know the dates. You can arrive as early as Thursday afternoon. We have joining instructions to send out however it has been held up by the irrigation system problem, the camp layout obviously is part of the JI. Giving the CTF an ultimatum will not solve anything, they are good enough after all to pay for your gas. Had we been at the old location none of these problems would have existed. I'm sure that next year, none of these problems will exist if we are still at Lansdowne. If anyone has specific questions I will do my best to answer them. There is no secret information.
Btw, I'm not OMVA anymore.

The decision made by the CTF to move us to Lansdowne was only made this past winter. We are doing the best we can with what we have been given.

James, really what more info do you need. We have the dates May 13-15, the show times 0900-1700, meals (something edible)will be provided. Participants will be setup in a park. We can all show off and talk about our vehicles to the public and each other. Last year my friends and I brought some of our own food to supplement what was provided and we also went into town and sought out some awesome restaurants and had a blast. Some of us also went to the War Museum for a tour. I guess you could say we made our own fun.

Understandably, events are only a successful as volunteers can make them.
Remember too, the attendees who push, pull or drag their MVs to such an event are also volunteers who have invested many thousands of dollars into their craft . It is not unreasonable to ask for defined details well in advance to facilitate planning time off work, arrangements for transportation etc.
Not everyone likes last minute surprises.
All too many events "want", with unreasonable expectations, and then wonder why they have limited or no response , or participation.
Flipping someone a can of fuel or a few bucks for gas is a kind gesture but it comes up far short of a participant's real costs.
We do this because we love to, not because we have to. The general public does not care, nor do they respect what goes into these events or who owns the vehicles...
