two odd aussie ambulances

I was browsing through 24,0120 photos on 'Military' in Pictures Australias web site http://www.pictureaustralia.org/index.html and I came across these two photos in the Northern Territories Libary data banks.

The first is an Indian Bodied Chev Ambulance and is neg # 12366 and titled 'Come on in Ambulance in front of A and D room 119 Australian General Hospital 1942'

The odd thing about it is it seems to be on a longer wheelbase then normal and has a canvas covered opening full hight just behind the cab on the LHS as well as no hinged door on the cab but rather a 'C' cab style.

This is the first time I have seen this style of Indian Pattern body. Can anyone shed any further light on this one.

this shows a soft top Ford normally seen as M/H type gun tractors with an ambulance body on it.

Negative # is 34699 and it is captioned 'ambulance'.

once again this is the first one of this type I have seen. Can anyone shead any more light on it please?

Quite a find, I must say.

Both sets of photos seem to show vehicles with single rear wheel/tyre equipment, not something normally seen.

I have not linked to that site you mentioned but if you have more such from there, please share it with us.

Bill the Ford soft top always had single rear wheels even when used as a gun tractor and with the M/H convertion to 4 wheel drive and the Chevrolets with the Indian Pattern ambulance body fitted were also single rear wheels as well.

Pictures Australia is a site which links all the Australian on line data banks togeather and has facilities to see all of them or limit them to one site. The AWM is part of it as well. I do have a lot of other stuff from Pictures Australia as well but more just different photos of the normal type vehicles. The ambulances were something I have not come across before. I will burn a disc and send it to you to go with your other stuff.

If you like civilian stuff I typed in 'Trucks' and came up with 7500 plus hits. These will be any military stuff marked as trucks as well and will also be all eras up to present day. So looks like I got a few weeks viewing to do.

Sorry, minor brain fart on my part. It may have been the civvy type wheels on the front that threw me as I do not have many photos of that setup.

Great photo collection site you posted. I too did a couple of searches and it will definitely keep you busy. Me too when I have more time. Thanks for the link and I look forward to another disc or so from you.

Type in the address in your address bar, hit Go or whatever command your system uses and you will find it. Type it just as Cliff provided it.

Once there, you will find a gold mine of stuff just as Cliff said.
I was especially pleased at the variety of sites linked to this data base. I have spent weeks on the AWM site and it was nice to see a lot of new stuff. I used "military trucks" as a search criteria, for example and found more than I can view in a day.

Ha I have let my secret out.

Thanks for fixing the link Hanno and I am glad that you folk are looking as well. I have found that sometimes the Northern Territories libary site is down for all but the thumbnails. What I did was wrote the negative #'s down on a piece of paper and later when it was OK again researched using the neg numbers to get the large pic.
