Default Pontiac/Chev utes WW2

I had not heard the fate of the ex Colin Anderson Pontiac ute until today. Being gutted by fire whilst in the ownership of the man from rust hill does not bode well for its survival.
A report of an Aussie ute in American service.
An elderly friend tells the story of an event he witnessed in Newcastle NSW during the war. He was present when a pair of unarmed African American servicemen were fired upon by fellow countrymen and one killed. The Negros had just walked past him when as he stated in his own words, 'A Pontiac ute came up the street driven by a couple of American MPs. The Negros saw them and ran for their lives. The MPs raced after them jumped out of the ute, ran after and started firing at the fleeing men. One fell lifeless, the other got away into bushland. One MP stayed with the dead man while the other went and got the ute. They threw the corpse into the back like a sack of spuds and drove off.'
I asked what it was that the Negros had done to deserve that sort of treatment and he told me they belonged to a trucking company camped outside the town and the town was 'off limits' to them.
In light of recent events it appears that little has changed.
