Transfer Case Air Cleaner

I'm missing this item for my HUP. I have the spigot that screws in to the case, but not the filter element.

Parts list, Manual C8A-04, p. 96 lists this assembly as Cleaner Assy. p/n 1542480, as well as "Nipple, Close Pipe 1/2, p/n 121208"

Wondering if there is a generic p/n for this, and source.

I've scalped, cropped and attached one of Derk Derin's (Ford) pics to show what I am talking about.

I am guessing that once you have the right filter you will need a 1/2 BSP barrel nipple (fairly common in brass and steel) You will pick up a steel one from someone who supplies hydraulic fittings. They come with a hex in the middle, or sometimes just with the two threads. If you find a second hand filter, you will probably get the fitting with it.

My guess would be that it will be a 1/2 NPT close pipe nipple with hex wrenching feature. We were never big on BSP over on this side of the pond. You can pick up the pipe nipple at the same place you can find that cap; any decent hydraulics supply shop will have it. Bring the photo with you. Possibly even princess auto in their hydraulics section, but I can't say for sure on the breather cap. Make sure you get a steel and not a brass fitting. They will cost about the same, but the steel will be a lot stronger.

Thanks for tips. The nipple isn't as big a concern as the correct filter cap itself. The spigot that is now in the case threads in with a 7/8" pipe thread, and the top end is just a plain tube, ca. 1/2". I'm wondering it that isn't itself the nipple part of the assembly and that the filter is simply a friction fit onto the top end of the spigot.

FWIW, mine was welded onto the end of the 1/2 inch tube. It was smooshed due to usage, so I took it off and have another breather cap ready.......which, by the way, comes off my spare Pontiac 261 engine. Same cap as on the t case breather.

Stop by and have a look at the one on the truck.The cab is tarped for the winter but you can still access the transfer case.But if it's missing,I know where you live!!!

I've looked in past for a modern match to this vent. Though I have found functional replacements from tractor and heavy equipment hydraulic outfits vent on hydraulic tanks. I have not found a look-a-like replacement for the original unit. The closest that I have come to the top mushroom is from a Ford truck but it is a push on crankcase breather.

When we find a source I need at least two for my 3-ton CMPs.

You do need these breathers I tried just putting a plug in, and the pressure build up from heating of the unit going down the road resulted in seals pissing out gear lube.

Hi guys Ford did something close on "D" series petrol trucks (English ford) with 6 cyl Mustang (300cu.in.fuel crisis motor adapted to trucks) They had one as a screw on for the belt driven compressor (air inlet), and another on the engine side cover. Not so sure the shape is correct.
