Default The Royal Newfoundland Regiment

48th Old Comrades Association News Letter
THE ROYAL NEWFOUNDLAND REGIMENT
On Sunday, April 27, 2003 at 11 :00 A.M., the placing of a wreath on their monument in Victoria Square or on some Toronto maps, Victoria Memorial Park.
In the war of 1812 - 1814 The Royal Newfoundland Fencibles, fore runners of The Royal Newfoundland Regiment had members of their regiment stationed in many places from Nova Scotia to Upper Canada, now Ontario.
On April 27, 1813 when the Americans landed near the town of York there were 93 members of the Royal Newfoundland Fencibles, some Royal Artillery, Royal Naval Artificers, The 8th Regiment of Foot, The Glengarry Fencibles militia and the Incorporated Militia from York at Fort York to oppose them. The Royal Newfoundland Fencibles suffered the following losses, 12 killed, 7 wounded and 17 taken prisoner.
The Royal Newfoundland Regiment regard this memorial as an important part of their history and some years ago asked the 48th Highlanders to assist them by placing a wreath on the monument on April 27th. The Regiment has done this since they were requested to and this year it is suggested that the Old Commrades Association do this as the Regiment will be away on a training program.
The O.C.A. expect to turn out the Drill Team in uniform, hopefully a bugler for Last Post and some members to place the wreath.
The park is on the east side of Bathurst Street south of Wellington Street and bordered by Portland and Niagara Dtreets.
