Nice photo Mike, funny i have been sorting a few Dingo items over the last week with the intention of starting a thread. No point in having a second so if its OK by you prehaps we can add to this one. Hers another of the type you posted it was to be the cover of a book i was involved in a number of years ago but never materialised. Richard F is well up on Dingos so i am sure he will have some awnsers

Malayan Dingos
I have seen the colour photo before, and Mike's seems identical in design. There are numerous different versions, somewhere I have a photo of a chap I knew, who served in the Royal Engineers in Malaya, sitting in one with his native driver, this one is different again. I have just come across a poor photocopy of a photo, depicting a Malayan Army Dingo on parade, with what looks like a turret from a Ferret mk2, or similar design.
There is a collector nearby who has one, ex-Gurkhas and the drivers hatch is so small, with nil vision to the left, it would be a pain to work on, or even drive. No doubt the centre of gravity has drastically altered as well.

Here is another post war version of a Dingo, I would think probably ex-Malaya. I spotted it in Guernsey, at a show in 1990, thought to be locally owned.

Do you know how original this last model is. You may recall a small batch of these turned up during the 1980's all in rebuilt condition. One dealer claimed to me at the time that a number of kits had been found and they had been converted in this country. I am not a where of any photographs of this model in action, but I believe there is one in a museum in Malaysia. The turrets are from the Mk1 Saracen rather than the Ferret. All the improvised Mk2 and 2/2 Ferrets converted in the region ended up with this turret as well. The pedestal mount version is also interesting. Could that be a version of the PLM Mount? I have a similar picture taken at Bovington with a Vickers on the mount. |

Last photo............it may have been from Hong Kong police ( a long shot guess ), because I know of someone with a RHKP Ferret that had a Saracen two door turret fitted, the mounting plate had been cut to shape and welded on to the Ferret hull! There was a company that dealt in Dingo parts back in the 1960/70's, called E.C. McCann at Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset. They did mods like this for export to small countries in need of light armour. Seem to think there were some pics of their work in Windscreen a while back. PLM mount,........... it does look like one, I am familiar with the one on a Humber scout, as I converted one to twin Bren mounts.

I supplied some photographs showing the rebuild line at E. C. M to Windscreen some time ago. I also sent in some pictures which the owner gave me showing the Vickers modification.
For those of us who had the oportunity to visit E.C.M. it was a truly amazing place. Unfortunately much of stock went into the skip due to lack of demand. I have a letter some where dated from the early 1980's where the company were still supplying Dingo spares to Burma. |

I do not recognise the first Dingo, but this second one is, I am certain, Michael Mutch. It is now owned by Forum member, Nigel Watson, and could be named the Phoenix. Nigel will no doubt explain that one!

Do any original armoured roofs survive or are they all reproductions?
Also does anyone have any photographs of the Mk1 at Bovington? I believe there is another MK1 pictured on the modeling site which has had its 4 wheel steering welded up, presumably as part of a army mod, and is now basically a Mk2 |

Here is a picture of the Mk1 at Bovington, not a lot of space to get a good shot as it is crammed in a storage shed. No folding metal roof fitted, and from memory, when I saw it 25 years ago on display, it did not have a roof then, probably converted to canvas whilst still in service.

There are some strange weld patterns on the Bovington example unless the hull was cut down at some stage.

It actually looks as though the hull may have been damaged at one time and new plate welded in.

I recognise the location to be the old A20 coming out of Folkestone enroute for Dover. It was a MVCG tour to either Ardennes or Arnhem. I took some photos a few miles further on. Date would be either 1977 or 1978. Yes, I am certain that was Michael driving.
