Default C15 4x2 Steering Gear

I couldn't find this by searching the forum.

I need to replace the tapered worm bearings in my 11 cab C15. I picked up a pair of tapered bearings (part no. 261866), but they are far too small and won't fit. The ones that came out of my steering gear are approx. 1-13/16" OD, whereas the 261866 ones are a good 1/4" smaller. I noticed that the end cover doesn't look like the ones I've seen on other 11 cab C15's, so I think my steering gear may be a later cab 13 type; it certainly looks quite close to the one in the attached first photo. Anyhow, on the side of my casing it says "SAGINAW GEAR 267977".

Can anyone out there with access to a C15 (4x2) cab 13 steering gear confirm if that is what I have? And if so, what tapered worm bearing numbers should I be looking for?

Thanks,
Owen.

P.S. If anyone needs a pair of tapered bearings part no. 261866, I have a couple to spare!

Default Bearing

Hi Owen,
My parts book shows bearing #261866 for applications before serial number 284- -01523 and part #178480 after serial number 284- -01523.
Hope this helps.
Paul

Thanks for that Paul. After checking my 1953 Chevrolet master parts list, #178480 was also used on the 42-48 COE models. It is Hyatt number 10983 R, so should be available.

I now just need confirmation that my steering gear is actually the same as the later C15 cab 13...

Thanks,
Owen.

Owen,

I think you might be right that the steering box could be of a cab13 C15, but don't have the info to confirm for sure. I did check pictures of 3 (early 1940) Cab11 C15's and they all have the same steering box, which is different from yours.

Regarding bearings....Cross reference websites can be a great help. It seems the bearing is also used in a number of tractors, which might help in finding a replacement bearing closer to home.

Default Victory!

The delivery man dropped two of these off today. I bought them on a whim, as they were cheap. They're an exact match for the old ones out of my steering gear. So, if anyone else has a 'SAGINAW GEAR 267977' steering gear, the 42-48 GM/Chevy COE truck is the same. Note: part no. GM#178479 is the race, GM#178480 is the bearing. Thanks folks!

Owen.

Default bearings

Is the C8 box changeable with the C15 box ? Might be worth looking at the GM CMP major assemblies book for swapover details. A very handy addition to the CMP restorers book shelf , the Major Assemblies manual.

Just had a look in the 1944 CMA-01 MAJOR ASSEMBLIES book
266721 steering box is listed as fitting both the C8 and the C15 with 1st type cab

It's a very handy publication by GM Canada 1944. The book details the many varied engine and transmission and other major components of CMP vehicles and armoured cars made by GM Canada.

There is a reprint copy available from the guy ( MLU forum member ? ) selling the reprint manuals, can't remember his name.

It was Alex Blair who saved a whole collection of original manuals from the estate of a wartime GM employee from "disposal". I presently own the collection. This is the second inquiry this weekend about this particular manual after no interest for years. I don't have stock of this manual reproduced. It has quite a few foldout pages larger than 11x17 so is a bit awkward to print at Staples or other neighbourhood printshop. I need to get a price for the other member who asked and will let people know.

Default According to my copu of major assemblies.......

....267977 is not listed as a CMP steering box....... closest is 267979 for C8a or C8AX..

Listed for the C15 is 1st type 266721......3/8 fill plug
.......second type cab 268144 ........ 1/2 fill plug
when stock depleted use 5266917........1/2 fill plug

the critical dimension common to the 3 above is the "distance from theend of sectorshaft to center of housing...stated as 4 3/4 inch

PS....cab 11 C15a is 266728.....crityical dimension is 6 3/4 inch with 3/8 filler plug.

the "assembly book" was one of the first one I got from Good Old Alex..... a worthwhile addition to anyone rebuilding CMPs....
The fold out section are 4 to 5 pages wide by 11.5 (8.5 x 5=34 inches) a real bitch to reproduce with a typical photocopy machine.

Good luck
