Another S.E.G.
At the risk of a torrent of abuse from Geoff, here are the latest images.
We are indeed living in the lucky country. http://www.oldcmp.net/images/seg/tam11_04seg.jpg Guess which aircraft... But before you get too upset, I should add there wasn't actually any flying done this weekend due to a locust plague, but I was happy to be there anyway. http://www.oldcmp.net/images/seg/tam11_04_2.jpg CLUE: This is in the engineer's seat which is a bit of a climb to get to...

To much picture, make it more obscure.

Next time I will try to make it harder... This Cat was flown from France last year and is painted as a RAAF Black Cat which is all very nice but in 38c heat turns into a major sauna on the ground. The footage of it landing is a spectacular cloud of locusts. You can see some of the strikes here. The Cat belongs to HARS in New South Wales and was flown by Gordon "Gordo" Glynn who is a very experienced warbird pilot. Gordo commented the air was clear until the flare in landing then there was a lot of noise and he lost forward vision. There were two reasons flying was cancelled, one being the safety aspect - if a locust clogs a pitot head you lose the airspeed indicator, and they can also clog intakes and inhibit cooling. (I saw a number of cars pulled over with the bonnets (hoods) up) The other reason is the hundreds of hours cleaning the aircraft. Disappointing, but it looks like I'll have to wait until next year to fly in the Hudson.

Sky prawns
Here are a couple of images from the video:
The moment of touchdown, or maybe splatdown... And taxying in stirred 'em up too. I had to duck because they'd lowered the floats!

vintage aircraft
Hi Keith:
Just an old vet reminiscing. I really enjoy your excellent photographs of the aircraft's you fly in. I well remember in the fall of 1940 being stationed under canvas in the Thames Estuary. One afternoon, hearing a loud droning sound that I had never heard before. This was the beginning of the massive air raids over England. Looking up, the sky was filled with German bombers. Then out of no where came the hurricanes and spitfires which became wildly embroiled in a massive dog fight with flaming aircraft spiraling out of the melay. As a young 18 year old even though death was happening to many of the pilots I could not help but be mesmerized by the site and watch it all happening. It was like I was watching a Hollywood movie. I live right next to the March Air force Base in California which has an excellent museum of all military aircraft and I often go over there and photograph them as I have been and amateur photographer most of my life. So I sure can appreciate the excellent photographs you have placed in MLU. |

Re: vintage aircraft
Wow, thanks for sharing that, Norm - what amazing sights you have witnessed. I'd love to see some of your aircraft pictures some day.

S.E.G. huh?
Elsewhere that scorching hot (40 deg celcius or 100 deg farenheit) Aussie weekend, our 3.7in Anti-Aircraft gun open day was busy trying to knock down any "Black Cats" that crossed our path.

No more S.E.G.'s!
Cranking a heavy AA gun barrell up and down and round and round on a hot day is bad enough, but doing it in a woollen uniform is sheer madness! First man to wipe that grin off "Flyboy Keefy"'s face wins a cold beer!
Any downed aircrew are to be questioned roughly until they hand over the 2 DVD set of "Back of Beyond" and "Outback Mailman" |

Action shot
Pic from last year when the weather was much cooler. (Is it more sensible to be out in the rain or the hot sun?: )

Wipes grin off face
That would be enough to wipe the smile off the dial of a Cat pilot's face!
Great to see a 3.7" in "use". It doesn't take interrogation to buy the Back of Beyond Collection, just a call to the Royal Flying Doctor
