Possibly for Wireless Set No.38 Mk.II in a tank?

(The early AFV fit used a standard infantry set and Control Unit No.12 to allow communication with supporting infantry. It may be part of that setup.)

Chris.

Is so, that could be very useful for my Firefly resto.

The CES lists the WS38 (note - not WS38AFV), but no information given about how this set is mounted.

I had assumed that perhaps it was just carried loose somewhere.

Anyone know for sure please?

Cheers

Tim

The 38 set utilised its own battery, presumably the standard set battery and as Chris said, was connected to the system using a CU No. 12.

I suspect the plan to fit them in a lot of tanks never quite came to fruition as you often see the extra aerial mounting bracket welded on with no aerial base fitted in wartime photos.

I have seen a drawing of the installation in a Churchill, can't remember where!

Gents,

The Working and Fitting Instructions for W.S. No. 38 Mk II or II* in Churchill Tanks can be found here:

http://www.vmarsmanuals.co.uk/archiv...chill_Tank.pdf

On page 18 you can observe the nomenclature for 2 different "Carriers":

"ZA 16870 Wireless Sets No. 38 Mk II or II* Carriers No. 4" is used in Churchill
III and IV.
"ZA 17203 Wireless Sets No. 38 Mk II Carriers No. 5" is used in Churchill I and II.

So the Carrier under discussion is not for a Churchill but it may house a No. 38 set in a different vehicle.

Colin
