In 1942, the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) in Australia issued a requirement for a light armoured car to be used in patrolling and airfield defence. The requirement resulted in a vehicle designated Scout Car S1 (American). About 40 vehicles were produced by Ford Australia.

The vehicle was based on a Ford F15 4x2 chassis (a single 4x4 vehicle was built). The open-topped armoured hull was similar to that of the M3 Scout Car. The armament consisted of one .50 inch (12.7 mm) heavy machine gun and two .30 inch machine guns on skate rails, operated by the crew of five.

Regards Rick.

Default Schutt

I think Bob Schutt QLD has one of those ?

It would have been the USAAC in 1942 , the USAF was a post WW2 name change I think.

You are right Mike K.Bob does have one in QLD and had it at Corowa 2 Corowas' ago.

I don't know about the USAAF bit as I copied and pasted that wording from WIKA and would you know, it was accredited to Mike C. so I'll stick with that unless he comes back and changes it.

Regards Rick.

Default Interesting to see the titles

Shame they're a bit overpriced. There are some I hadn't see before. Thanks for sharing them Rick.

Well pity 'Wiki-Crap' can't read or 'copy-right' .... there is no mention of the USAAC or the USAAF or the USAF in my 1993 book which included the chapter on the S1 (SC4) scout car. Still, can you expect anything better from 'Wiki-crap'?

The purchaser, direct from Ford MC of Aust, was the USASOS - US Army Services of Supply on behalf of/for the use of the USAFIA - US Army Forces in Australia.

Two are still in existence as far as I know: Bob's restoration and a body(?) stuck on a chassis, also in Qld (we discussed it on another thread, I seem to remember?)

Most of the images are well known ones and most have been published before in various places. The third one down, with the building behind with the writing, is a new one to me, and I wonder where it is. I purchased a copy of the 4x4 image when I did the book in 1993 - it came from the RAC Museum at Bovington, and I've since sourced a couple more from other places. But I've never seen the images with the text blocks included, so that and image 3 are new ones on me.
