In service we replaced or cleaned that screen filter...well, never unless the vehicle fuel system ground to a halt. We knew it was in there, and would check it out if the pump was having trouble running, but that was about it.

As to those styro-safe balls, those were to be chucked out of the tanks when you were in there for any other reason. They were blamed for a lot of the early flooding problems which resulted in that huge spin on filter modification up front.
