Default Wire loom for C15A Cab13

HI everyone.

How much of the wire loom would I need for a Cab13 C15a. Also what sizes would be needed.

Woudl I need only 10ft of various sizes or should I go for 20ft or more.

Chev's of the 40's offers 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2 inside diameters

Anyhelp is much appreciated.

Default All depends.....

Hi Jordan

The original loom was a set of wires assembled and then a special machine wove a cotton loom tight over the wires.... only repro wirign shops can do that work..... although Phil Waterman has that end of the business sorted out.....

The looms you are looking at are better described as a "Universal loom" into which you will insert your pre selected and pre cut individual wires......... so you may need 5 feet of the 1/2 inch for the thicker part near the centre and instrument panel and smaller sizes as you get to the rear end for tail lights...... may also depends if you are installing 2 or 4 tail lights and possibly double filaments for turn signals....

In the absence of the real woven looms these tar impregnated hollow tubes are not bad at all.....

I would suggest a 1/2 for the heavier sections and possibly 3/8 for the rest....... remember you do not want it too tight or you will have hard time snaking the individual wires in the tube....

Talk to Phil........ look at his site and see how he used a sheet of plywood to repro the wiring harness.... he is a pro....

Hi Bob and Jordan

I'm working on a response that I hope will be of help but I want to get some measurements on the OD and ID of the tar tube loom used on the CMPs. Also working on a list of all the orginial locations, which is taking some research of old pictures of my HUP and C60S before I replaced the wiring Harnesses.

Thanks to both of you for responding.

I saw one of the trucks from CC4 had this kind of universal loom. In my mind it looked fine and not out of place. I simply needed an approx amount as I did not want to get too little or too small of a diameter.

Also im not in any hurry as the wiring is months down the road but I can at least start thinking of it now. I will also look forward to Phil's answer in detail.

Default Where is it used.....

About the tar impregnated woven tubes.....

Where exactly is it used.....???

I have noticed two seperate pieces in the nose area which encloses the wires going to the headlights....... and have seen left over pieces in the taillight area BUT only on cab 13.......

I got some of the tube material from Rob and it is brand new and price hard to beat..... may main use will be for my the 1956 Dodge Power wagon C4pw....... the loom is used everywhere even inside the frame on the Dodge........

In my cab 11 every little bit of wiring insulationhad been heaten or carried away by rodents...... all that was left was a mess of fine copper strands........

First if NOS tar loom is stiff, try warming it with a hair dryer helps to restore the flexibility.

Here is the beginnings of a list of where the tar loom is used on Cab 13s
If you are only going to use the tube in the original locations, let us start a list:

Right and Left Head light buckets to the wiring harness blocks on either side of the radiator
Right and Left Front Marker Lights to the wiring harness blocks on either side of the radiator
Right Rear Marker Lights to wiring harness plug connection, right rear of frame
Right Rear Brake Light to wiring harness plug connection, right rear of frame
Left Rear Marker Light across behind rear frame cross rail to the wiring harness plug connection, right rear of frame
Left Rear Brake Light across behind rear frame cross rail to the wiring harness plug connection, right rear of frame
Left Gas Tank Gage lead across center frame rail to wiring harness plug connection just behind cab back on right side of frame
Right Gas Tank Gage to wiring harness plug connection just behind cab back on right side of frame

Across behind dash to map light (if equipped)
Around sections of the windshield vacuum tube particularly where it passes through the dash center of windshield
Other locations to possibly add or use the tarred loom tubing

Very good question which I'm not sure of the answer. This will require some research. Know that the tar tube loom was being used in vehicle prior to the war. Would suspect that it would have been used on the early CMPs.

Default Tarred Loom in 12 Cabs

Hi Boobee:

Our C8 has original tarred (tired?) loom in it so you should be OK. I bought some NOS early pattern marker lights (the ones with the big rubber bodies) from Brian Asbury and they came with tarred loom.

Cheers! Mike

Default Hi Mike...back in NCR???

MIke I got similar lights from Brian but my assumtion is that they were intended for later Cab 13 not necessarily for early cab 11...

I have the impression that early cab 11 had the 2 of the smaller steel lights ... tube shape.... and I am not sure they used the tar tubes on the cab 11 or 12........ at least not on the remnants of looms I have seen inside frames.......

On the front fenders of my cab 11 the fender lights were wired underneath the fenders.... on my cab 12 similar to others I have seen the marker lights were wired inside a steel tube fastened to the fender.........

So little time and so little evidence left......

Bob

Default loom

I bought my loom from Brian many years ago.

Bob- from what I understand that the rubber lights were used on the cab 11 and 12 as tail lights.

I have often wondered whether cab 12's had side lights mounted on the front mudguards as some you see evidence of a hole for the light and on others there is nothing at all.

Default Which model had what lights...?

Hi Max

Looking a Chevrolet January 1941 # 175 Army parts catalogue

.... it only shows the famous rubber taillights and makes no mention of front fender lights.

.......in the Ford Illustrated army parts catalogue dated January 1942 it has pictures of only the early cab 12 and none have any front fender lights. In the electrical section of that manual ONLY the rubber taillights are listed and NO mention of frooont fender lights.

Now it changes....... in the Chevrolet part manual datedApril 1944
we now have listings for "side lamps" and shows a listing for (First job - rubber type lamp)........

....diagram now shows rubber and metal tube lamps.......

I have a 1942 Chev C15a and it has the rubber marking lights ( in poor shape) with the wiring inside a protective tube fastened to the front fender.

On My cab 11 only the brackets for the lights were left and no evidence of hole for a tube..... in fact some wires to the fender lights were mounted underneath the fender..... not sure if that was original.....

So what is the mystery of them little lights....... seems certain that rubber tail lamps came first on the early model...... any record of service bulletin introducing the "side lamps" to the CMP.....??

Bob

I have 2 1940 cab 11 C8s and neither has any extra holes in the front fenders for side markers or wiring tubes. One of them has a flatiron bracket bolted on with the fender bolts outboard of the headlights. I'm not sure what they're for. The headlight wires are routed between the fender and the fender brace so aren't exposed in the wheel well.
My 1943 HUP has the marker lights.

I have NOS 11/12 cab fenders and they have the wire tubes. Of all the 11 or 12 cab trucks I have had, non had the wire tubes.
Cheers,
Barry

Default ...and your conclusion is......

So Barry what is the real story.....

When did the side lamps make an appearance and when did the tubes come into play????

Would David Hayward know????? another thesis for David....

Anything in old service bulletins...?
