Had lunch today in Montreal with a Mr.Richard Raybold originally from the UK.His dad was a sherman driver in Burma.Anyone have info on this regiment.He also says his dad served there with Canadian troops because he remembered Dow beer.The only Canadians I recall are Air Force,as my uncle war a rear turret driver on a Mitchell B-25 twin engined bomber.He mentioned his dad was in the famous battle of Imphal.God,I love this stuff.Learn something new every day.Any responses?

Re: Welsh Dragoon Guards
Hi Garry;
The only Dragoons that served in Burma were the: 3rd Carabiniers 25th Dragoons, who were formed at Stalkot, India on 1 Feb 41. The Welsh Battalions that served in Burma were Infantry: The Royal Welch Fusiliers - 1st and 2nd Battalions The South Wales Borderers - 6th Battalion The Welch Regiment - 2nd Battalion Thats about it Garry. Cheers Garry, I think your friend was refering to the 3rd Carabiniers (Prince of Wales's Dragoon Guards)

'The Welsh Cavalry'
Hi Gents,
I think this might possibly be tied up with common nicknames for regiments? There is a modern regiment (currently serving as divisional recce regiment for 1st UK Armoured Division in Iraq) called the Queen's Dragoon Guards and is commonly known as 'The Welsh Cavalry' due to its traditional recruitment areas in south and west Wales (you might have seen them on the news operating with 3 Commando Brigade in CVR(T) light armour). It was created post-war from the amalgamation of cavalry regiments that traditionally recruited in this area. The two that I remember for definite are the King's Dragoon Guards and the Queen's Bays (the combination of which created the modern title) and I think the Carabiniers might have had a hand in it somewhere as well. This is all half-remembered from regular 'regimenatl history' lectures from a friend who served with them in the First Gulf War - I'll see if I can find out more about their background. What is certain is that there have never been any cavalry regiments with the word 'Welsh' in the official title (though there have been a few 'Prince of Wales' Owns' - none of which were actually Welsh! Re: 'The Welsh Cavalry'
Hi Mark;
Reference: 1st, The Queen's Dragoon Guards - formed in 1959 by the merger of the 1st, King's Dragoon Guards and The Queen's Bays (2nd Dragoon Guards) - Recruiting Area: - Wales, Herefordshire and Shropshire. Home Headquarters is in Maindy Barracks, Cardiff, Wales. Reference: Carabiniers - 3rd Carabiniers (Prince of Wale's Dragoon Guards) merged with the Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons) in 1971 to form The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabininers and Greys) - Recruiting Area: - all of Scotland. Home Headquarters is in Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland. Yes, I agree with Mark, there have never been any Cavalry Regiments with the word 'Welsh' (or 'Welch') in them, in the UK Forces. Cheers
