I don't know what a tax symbol is, but at one time CFB Gagetown was known as the Combat Training Centre or CTC. Is the truck from the east coast?

Cheers,
Dan.

The X in the box means infantry, and the CTC, as mentioned, is combat training center. If it is an Alberta truck, I would suggest Wainwright.

The symbols are "tactical signs", or in army slang, tac sign.

Default Tac Sign

It looks like there is a 2 to the left of the sign.

Default Tax

My spellcheck plays tricks on me when I get caught not proofreading (should have been tac).

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yes an east coast truck (Gagetown).

Ed: It was a poorly positioned photo, but yes I believe a "2" to the left

This is from a precis I wrote in 2007 on 3 CIBG / 3 CG. The last paragraph shows how the CTC came to be.

"Within two years however, 3 Combat Group's time had come. On 27 May, 1970 the entire group paraded for the last time under its commander, Brigadier-General CJA Hamilton (late PPCLI). Taking part in the march and roll past were HQ 3 CG, 2 RCHA, The RCD, 2 Field Squadron, 3 Signal Squadron, 1 RHC, 2 RHC and 3 Service Battalion. At midnight 3 Combat Group was no more and standing in its place was the new Headquarters Combat Training Centre and Camp Gagetown under Brigadier-General Duncan McAlpine (late RHC). In July both battalions of the RHC were placed on the Supplementary Order of Battle and its soldiers badged as members of The RCR. At the same time The RCD was transfered to Germany and replaced by C Squadron of the 8th Canadian Hussars. 2 RCHA was transfered to CFB Petawawa less E Battery which remained in Gagetown to support the CTC. In time 3 Signal Squadron and 3 Service Battalion would disband."

The "2" to the left of the infantry tac sign on your truck identifies the unit it belonged to as 2 RCR. At the time, 2 RCR was configured as 2 RCR Battle Group with 2 Engineer Squadron attached, reporting to HQ CTC. I think, but don't quote me, that "C" 8CH and "E" Bty remained under direct command of the CTC. One of the tasks of all the units was to support the Combat Arms School which also came under CTC control.

The CTC and CAS were done away with in early 1978. The CAS was divided into three individual schools, one for each arm. In 1977 I attended Phase II at the CAS. In 1978 I attended Phase III at the Infantry School. (Didn't seem to make the DS any less cranky, though.)

Cheers,
Dan.
