Alex,

Not one to pick at things, it must be said that the book is relating to the Valentine, ie Infantry Tank MkIII. I have several manuals relating and they all state Valentine. This appears to be an early issue manual and the name does not yet appear on the title. The early manuals relating to the Infantry Tank MkIV do not show Churchill on the cover but in small letters within brackets inside the book.

Richard

Thanks Richard
On my copy of the infantry tank mark 4 there is no reference to Churchill that I can find, although the mark 5and 6 manual has Churchill all over it..
My mark 4 manual was issued in May '41...
Just out of Curiosity what page was that Churchill reference on in your mark 4 manual..?
Thanks for the info on the early Valentine manual......

Default Val or not

I wasn't certain if it was a Valentine or not, hence the (?). The tank certainly had Valentine lines, although those full sand skirts threw me in identifying it.

Hi Tony,
I have a book published by The Tank Museum some years ago, showing a photo of, to quote, "Infantry Tank MkIII, Valentine I at Vickers Armstrong 1941". This is fitted with sand skirts and extra fuel tank on the left hand rear, as picture in manual. Also a point of interest, the book shows the Valentine I to be fitted with an AEC petrol engine, subsequent models from II onwards, were of course AEC and GM diesels. The manual on Ebay lists fuel injection pump on the index page, so is for a Valentine II, I would think.

Hello Alex,

The Workshop manual I have here is a Vauxhall publication and their ref. number is on the bottom of the inside title page, TS.155 and dated October 1941. The heading on this page reads;
TANK, INFANTRY, MARK IV
(CHURCHILL)

Hi Richard..
Mine says across the top...
TANK,INFANTRY,Mark IV

Instruction Book
Shows the Vauxhall logo.

The "NO show" statement
Issued by V******Ts.149. May 1941...
No mention of Churchill any where in the manual that I can find..

They may not have been called Churchills at that point..
Mine has a really dark green leatherette cover with a green dome snap closer on the over flap..
The brits knew how to make a manual ..great detail with colour and well illustrated..
Now if you guys only drove on the right side of the road..

Alex,

You have the drivers manual, they usually did have the buttoned flap, mine is the workshop manual in black with embossed Vauxhall emblem. Interesting the, "Issued by V****", assume you mean the word has been obliterated? My book says Vauxhall Motors Ltd. If Vauxhall has been blanked in your book, it confirms even more now, a discussion I had on here before, where I have found data plates on wartime British vehicles and the makers name is removed just leaving the first letter. My theory was that it was an attempt to conceal the manufacturer and their location from bombing, etc.

By the way, we do drive on the right side of the road, its you guys who drive on the wrong side

regards,
Richard

Hi Richard
No it is written in full ... Vauxhall Motors Ltd. ..I was in a hurry..I don't know why..
NOw that you mention it I see that I have the instruction book for the Mark lV the ,Mark V and Vl and the Harry Hopkins and the Coventry armoured car and others..
The Harry Hopkins is an interesting tank..For runner to the Tetrarch (SP?) ..Like to have one to run around the neighbourhood with..It would probably fit in my driveway..
Have a good new year..

So, is this Val book on e-bay likely to be a Driver's Instruction book, or a Workshop manual?

(Driving on the left of the road, but upside down on the globe.: )

Hang on Tony..
I believe this is the drivers manual..
Bing upside down is only fun with one of the opposite sex...
I can see Austrailians driving on the wrong side of the road because they can't drive off the island to do anyone else any damage, but the Kips with the Chunnel now in place will soon be sorted out by the fro...er...French as to the proper side of the road to drive on..
