Default Wooden rifle butt socket/mount question

Hi
I have an original wooden rifle butt mount I got out of a cab 13.
I tried an original lee Enfield no 4 mk1 in it and didn't fit, also tried a m1917 which fit a bit better but not great either.
Does any one have a similar problems?

One of my friends have reproduced a small quantity of them for my vehicles.
They have the same diamentions as the original only a bit better finish.

He has found a way to make them fairly cheaply, 14€ each, using a two piece construction, instead of chiselling the centre out, in order to get the sloping bottom.

Default Rifle but socket

Hi Niels,

Interesting, your difficulty with the rifle butt not fitting the socket.

I don't own any firearms here in Australia to check, but I checked the measurement off what I believe is my original .303 rifle socket and it is 122mm at the widest opening. I have always assumed it was an original but I guess it is possible that it could be a very old reproduction.

How does that dimension compare to your socket?

Cheers,

I just went and tried a rifle in it and it fit fine. Mine measure right around 4-3/4" on the inside.

It measured right around 4-3/4" on the inside length.

There is also a small drain hole drilled on an angle at the one end.

Niels,

Shown are the remains of my rifle socket. The early Enfield fits....but only just.

I measured 121mm on the inside, which seems to match the measurements Jordan and Jacques took.
